I love how the colour web is almost completely incomprehensible at this point. Taking a page out of the musical’s notes and reuse everything I can humanly get away with

Magenta is added to include when colours are mutations or altered versions of each other

Gavroche: he’s got Madame Thenardier’s ginger hair and freckles, Enjolras’ complexion, and a cap and light brown coat like Eponine. I also made his hair shape a little bit like Valjean’s bc they briefly interact in the movie. His coat’s colour is the same as Javert’s light streak for psyoping Javert purposes. He’s one of the few characters who doesn’t have a colour that’s completely unique to themselves, this is because he hasn’t grown up enough yet to develop his own colour. The rest of the amis have a black tie/noose shaped tie like Enjolras, but Gavroche’s is more a red neck tie like a boy scout would have, since he is the youngest, and perhaps no one expected/wanted to imagine him to be killed at the barricades.

He’s like if Eponine looked more like Madame Thenardier with a dash of revolutionary spirit

Grantaire: He’s got shoulder-length hair like Valjean, but it’s swooped to the side a bit like Marius’, and it’s partly tied up at the back like Enjolras. He’s also got a few streaks of ginger. His hair is less rounded and more straight/spiky than Valjean’s though. His coat is a little bit like Marius’, as a combination of Valjean’s and Javert’s coat, and they both have green vests (though Marius’ one is less obvious and more of a pale minty colour). Like how the front/back of Enjolras’ vest is red/back, the inside/outside of his coat is red/black. Instead of the flag belt that is standard for the rest of the Amis, he instead only has the pin thing on his chest. He also lacks the black noose thing that the rest of the Amis does, which I attribute also to his lack of association/commitment to the Amis’ cause as well.

He’s like if Gavroche grew up depressed and looked like Valjean lol

The Bishop: he’s got slightly wavy shoulder-length white hair like Valjean, but it’s slicked back more like Javert’s. He is also taller and has a longer face like Javert. I designed the Bishop so that it’s like, Valjean took inspiration from him for his own appearance later on. The bishop’s black neck/collar thing mirrors Valjean’s neck tie thing, for example. The rest of his outfit is more or less standard catholic cassock. Notably, his sleeves have cuffs that are reminiscent of Javert’s coat cuffs. Originally I gave him a brighter shade of white, but I decided to give him the white on Fantine’s shirt. I feel he would appreciate that association. His metal cross and eye colour is the same as Javert’s dark grey pants.

He’s like if Valjean and Javert combined but the same way sodium and chloride combine to make table salt. The result is apparently an emotionally stable and not suicidal devout catholic.

Other notes:

The bishop was largely inspired by Pope Francis. To the point my starting prompt was to just draw Pope Francis from memory lol Im sorry I don’t know any Catholics

Thought about making his cassock more historically accurate with amaranth linings but I really like the all white look, makes him feel less extravagant.

I gave Grantaire a man bun bc I couldn’t decide how long I want his hair. It turned out fine bc it’s like, he wants to mimic what Enjolras has got lol

Grantaire’s eye colour is the same shade of blue in the french flag (see notes in part 2 for the significance of blue, and part 1 for how it relates to Enjolataire (since I removed blue from Enjolras’ design))

The concept of the Bishop being a combination of Valjean and Javert was a remnant of an idea I had for my old chocolatier fic lol

Gavorche’s pose takes inspiration from the rest of his family’s (Eponine’s stance, Madame Thenardier’s hand on hips, and Thenardier’s outward left hand) (please I dont want to start explaining how the others’ poses connect to each other my brain is going to implode 😂)

Chapter Highlights:

One of my favorite passages in this chapter because:

1. It foreshadows the Bishop's meeting with Jean Valjean;

2. The entire Bishop section of the book is like a long sermon on how to be a better Christian (literally more Christ-like). This is one of the many examples, it reminds me of Jesus at the cross forgiving the thief: "Tonight you will be with me in paradise", which is to say the Word of God/yhe Kingdom of God are for criminals/sinners as well. (Yes, this should be obvious to Christians but alas.)

And here another example on how to be a good Christian, there are several passages in the Bible saying you should not judge others and instead you should focus on recognizing sin within yourself:

This is why shit like 'protests' in front of abortion clinics to harrass patients are inherently un-Christian, Christians are not the sin police, you morons, go mind your own damn business and read the Bible or something.
