The Corners - Maxed out on Distraction
From the first beat of The Corners’ new album, Maxed out on Distractions, their post-punk influence becomes apparent. The album’s first track, We’re Changing, begins with a solo, high pitched bass, followed by a tight backing drum beat, something eerily similar to Joy Division’s quintessential sound. The Corners, a band out Los Angeles that formed back in 2012, released their most recent album in October of last year. Though they still haven’t quite hit it big, The Corners are digging a space for themselves in the music world. They might not be widely regarded yet, but they’ve developed an interesting sound, one that speaks to the niche of 80s post punk die hards (like myself). Songs like Love Letters sound straight out of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures. Other songs, like Caught in Frustration, could be taken from New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies for all I know.
Though all that may make The Corners out to be some rip off band trying to capitalize on the recent post-punk revival, they are far from that. Sure, they take some elements from the Smith’s, Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees, but that’s not all they are. There’s an element of driving, grungy hardrock, a lot like what you hear from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or even the Arctic Monkeys during their Suck it and See days. It’s seems like a more modern twist on old techniques. They add something new to what’s been around for over a quarter of a century. Yet they don’t stretch too far from their roots as to be avant garde or experimental. There’s room for originality, but also for commercial success.
And when you think about it, there aren’t too many bands still around today that play this style of music. If you want to throw the Strokes or Franz Ferdinand in the post punk revival genre, then maybe, but I don’t think of them that way. They seem to be more indie rock/pop punk even. Maybe, if I’m stretching it, Ty Segall or The Blind Shake could go along with The Corners, but even they don’t have that driving, bluesy rhythm to their songs.
Sure I can go back and listen to the Pixies if I want to, but they haven’t released anything good since the early 90s. Same with all the other bands that The Corners emulate to be honest. And I’m not saying that post punk is getting another revival or anything. And if it were, I doubt The Corners would lead the charge. But I’m also not saying I wouldn’t like to that happen…
