The beheading was obviously done for shock value, but the reason it fell flat was lack of motivation.
Daniel’s story this season was muddled. First, he wants to direct a documentary about Lestat. Use the musician for further acclaim because he thinks it’ll fill the Armand shaped hole in his heart. Makes sense. Drugs and work have always been the two constants in his life. Of course, Lestat is an obstinate subject and dupes him with the Nicki revelation. Daniel is upset, but we’ve seen him angrier in Dubai. Enough to strike Louis, mind you. Initially it just seems like another hurdle to unraveling the enigma that is Lestat.
Yet off-screen, Armand somehow managed to exploit this wound so thoroughly that Daniel wants Lestat to die?! He’s not just holding the bag as a favor, he’s refusing to give it to Raglan because he doesn’t want Lestat to survive. Maybe this could have worked if we see Daniel being even more entitled over Lestat’s story or more of Daniel with Armand, but that would have taken the shock out of that decapitation moment they wanted so bad. God forbid we utilize dramatic irony for more than incest reveals.
Which brings me to Armends, I mean Armand. Him decapitating Louis to get Louis to talk to him would make more sense if we ever saw Armand trying to talk to Louis. We don’t see Louis decline his call, reject a Zoom link, tear up a letter or nothing. If we saw even one scene of Louis rejecting Armand post divorce, perhaps this could have worked.
We also don’t see Armand mourning his relationship with Louis at all. In fact, we see it diminished (“It was not my love for Louis”). Why not do a short AA scene that shows him bereft at being left again.
I suspect the idea of the beheading came first and they reverse engineered the story to fit it into the narrative.
I don’t put it past Armand to corner Louis the way he did Lestat, but the execution was lacking.
