Upcoming Character 30th Anniversaries
With Knuckles' 30th Anniversary IDW Issue coming out this month, I wanted to talk about the possibility of any future 30th anniversary issues.
2025 (1995 Releases)
Knuckles Chaotix - April 1995 - Espio, Vector, Charmy
Tails Skypatrol - April 1995 - Witchcarters
Tails Adventure - September 1995 - Speedy, Kukku Battle Armada
One of the most likely to get a 30th issue? The Chaotix, not only are they still relevant and around in the modern era, but they're from a console game which kinda has more weight than a handheld. (Also I know SEGA has mentioned that the Classic Chaotix were banned characters but theres been a lot of references to them in recent years,,, I'm remaining positive about it. Besides Ian Flynn's #knowingsmile'd Classic Chaotix way back in September 2023)
That isn't to say that there's gonna be no love for the others, we might see the Witchcarters come back like how Amy shared the spotlight with Metal Sonic for her Anniversary issue or how Eggman has a story all to himself in Sonic's 30th Anniversary Annual. And well, it'd be a waste for them to have their designs refreshed for Tails' anni issue if they're not gonna reuse them as minor villains you know?
My guess on a plotline? Chaotix vs. Witchcarters, with Knuckles, Mighty and Ray making an appearance definitely. (Maybe Witchcarters kidnap Ray thinking he's Tails as revenge from Tails 30th anni issue?). We might even see teases of the Chaotix in Knuckles' issue. Maybe the Chaotix aren't a detective agency yet but were dragged to another adventure where they befriend each other and then become a detective agency. Convenient way to explain Mighty's departure from the group too.
As for the Battle Armada.... not sure. I'd love to see them back, especially given design refreshers but I can understand if they don't make an appearance.
2026 (1996 Releases)
Sonic the Fighters - 1996 - Bean, Bark, Honey? Sonic Flicky's Island - 1996 - The Flickies
We've already had the Flickies be centered back in Tails' Issue, I really can't see them being a central plot point again... In fact for 2026 I can't see any character getting 30th Anni issues... (like i can't see them making 30th anni solo issues for Bean or Bark, least of all Honey since she didn't even come out in 1996 properly. Maybe a Bean&Bark duo issue? or a Sonic the Fighters anni issue? I won't be opposed to it cause I especially LOVED the STF arc of Archie Sonic. Not sure if theyre willing to tread old ground but it'd be nice to see a cast roundup!) But yeah, I can see IDW taking a break with the Classic 30th Anni issues for 2026.
2027 (1997 Releases)
Sonic R - 1997 - Metal Knuckles, Tails Doll
Now THIS. the last of Sonic's Classic Releases. We haven't seen any of the non-sonic metals since Seasons of Chaos. and since Sonic R, we've actually seen quite a few more join their ranks:
Amy Doll from Sonic Mania (2017)
Metal Tails, Metal Amy (and Metal Trip) from Sonic Superstars (2023)
It'd be nice to have an issue dedicated to them, maybe a dual issue of Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll?
Saw the Team Dark meme and uhh
I had to..I just had to
come on witchcarter fans (all six of you) let me hear some cheers
Carrotia redesign idea
I feel the Archie design went a bit too far from the roots
I think a better idea would be to look at the asethetics archetype of Japanese delinquents
For example look at the aesthetics from fantart for the Manga watamote (while at Disneyworld). [by Akim-X on twitter. Link in source]
I think you can build on the original design using this while making it less terrifying. I like the idea of a bucktoothed rabbit who looks like she’s stoned out of her gourd.
(On a side note, I mourn the loss of cartoony influences in the facial designs of her teammates in order to make them look more “mobian”. It seems like the Fleischer cartoon inspiration of Classic Sonic are shunned now.)
these three idiots from a japan-only 1995 sega game gear game are the best sonic characters actually
You know, it's a shame the Witchcarters never got to interact with Geoffrey (in Archie, Witchcart is Naugus's sister). Just imagine the trio driving that skunk up the wall!
Naugus: Would you tell your apprentices to stop tormenting mine?!
Witchcart: Hm.. nah, your anger is funny.
XD
That would be funny, I need the witchcarters to beat his ass
