Day of Shame
This day is an anniversary worthy of attention
beyond the base outrage that should accompany
similar attacks on our nation like Pearl Harbor
or 9/11 and should include an annual memorial
for the Capitol police who lost their lives either
defending democracy or in the days afterwards
because they were so traumatized by the idea
of being attacked by their fellow Americans,
so haunted by the horror of fighting for their
lives, that, unable to process it, they believed
their only solution was to take their own lives.
Imagine that, please, those of you so deranged
that you would diminish their sacrifice in the
same way that others have assaulted veterans
returning from war, or taunted the parents of
children slaughtered in schools, or denied the
existence of the Holocaust. What material are
you made of that makes you resist the truth like
two negative magnets avoiding mutual contact?
What poison courses through your veins that
you would deny justice and humanity to those
most worthy of it? The answer is the Big Lie.
Resist it.
Wake up.
See reality.
We will welcome you back when you get here.
