The frieze, displayed at the Acropolis Museum. The frieze—in Greek, zophoros (from zoa: animals; and the verb phero: to bring)—was a continuous decorative band containing representations, usually carved in relief. In the case of Ionic temples, the frieze replaced the metopes in the architectural zone above the architraves in the exterior colonnade. The Parthenon's Ionic frieze—a highly innovative architectural element in a Doric temple— ran around the upper, exterior face of the cella. It was created during the years 442-438 BC, and is generally understood, in contrast to the mythological subjects of the temple's metope and pediments, to represent the real-life procession of the Greater Panathenaia, the most important festival of the city of Athens. #athens #acropolis #acropolisview #acropoliscenter #parthenonsculptures #ancientgreeks #ancientathens #greekhistory #beautifulathens #helloathens #welcometoathens #greektemple #parthenon #parthenontemple #bestviewintown #acropolisofathens #parthenonas #parthenonasview #thefrieze #anafiotikaplaka #awayfromhome #aroundtheworld #edücation #beautifulcitiesoftheworld #greekculture #greekgods #acropolismuseum #europevacation #europe2017 #travelingisliving (at Acropolis Museum - Μουσείο Ακρόπολης)
