"You came to me. Of all the places you could have gone, you came here."
Because I love you … “I didn't have anywhere else to go.” That was a lie; he could've easily gone to the council. Rasa, even the young Kazekage was rough around the edges, but there was still a strong love for the village and its people under the harsh exterior. Rasa was also young, one of the youngest leaders in the history of the village; he still had an idea of what it was like to be young. He would've understood, maybe even listened—but she was right. Baki didn't go there; he didn't inform the village or even Sasori's own grandmother of what she was doing. Planning to do, at least. She was still here, on Suna ground for the time being, but something in his guts told him it wouldn't be much longer.
“I wasn't going to tell on you if that's what you were thinking.” The idea of staying silent kept him awake at night just as much as the thought of telling did. If he kept his mouth shut, then he was a traitor to his village; if he told anyone what she was planning, he would be a traitor to Sasori. Baki wasn't sure which one bothered him more. “I'm not going with you." He couldn't just leave … if anything else, Baki still loved this village and its people. He couldn't go rogue, even if the woman he loved was. That didn't mean he wouldn't see her off … people abandon all the time, lesser ninja who think they're getting snuffed, merchants who need a more fruitful place to sell their wares … Sasori was none of those things.
Sasori was a top medical ninja; she was a scholar. She was one of the few elite shinobi the village had left to depend on, and she was prepared to throw all that away; she wanted to throw all that away. Throw him away—throw whatever it was they were building away. It hurt; it hurt more than he knew how to put into words. It twisted his guts into a hot, gargling knot that threatened to tighten and burst at any small inconvenience. Maybe coming here was an act of spite, a way to somehow hurt her in the same way.
Love was a cruel, bloodsucking creature. Maybe that's why all lovebirds tend to die when separated.
“But I won't tell anyone," he muttered. “I never saw you. I never knew you.”
