What Sondheim Can Teach Us About Experience Design – Theme Park Concepts
What if the key to understanding how story works in environmental/experience driven storytelling is not by thinking about "the story" but by thinking about the storIES.
What is an environment? It's a place with many things, many inhabitants, a whole trove of stories, not just one. I've already talked in the past about how attractions are like Robert Altman ensemble films, drifting from character to character.
I've too talked about the similarities between the concept musical and the theme park ride...many vignettes connected by a common theme.
And joe rohde often talks about the fractal nature of storytelling in environments
On the archetypical theme park ride...you venture past a series of scenes, each a little self contained story...often disconnected from each other. Think of any Marc Davis gag. Forensic storytelling, as Mr. Kay says. Then too, the setting itself has a story.
What connects all these is a common thread, the theme, many different explorations of a common idea. It's an anthology. Perhaps there is a character or narrator who helps fill in the blanks and point to the common thread.
And the "The Story" is you following the common thread: connecting the dots. "The Story" is the emotional journey you go on as you form conclusions via deductive and inductive reasoning along the path and witness each story- and then those conclusions and expectations are subsequently met, denied, subverted, and you are surprised, delighted, scared, made suspicious, anxious, or get catharsis. All via the manipulation of the storyteller. And if you're lucky the journey you yourself go on has its own link to the common thread: the theme. "The Story" is whatever justification is necessary to get that journey to take place.
Like...imagine a five paragraph essay. You have an introduction, 3 examples of your point - exploring different facets of the idea - and then a conclusion that summarizes your point.
Well just factionalize it. You propose a topic: Pirates. Then you give some examples and possible conclusions: Pirates are long gone and dead, Pirates are spooky, Pirates are spectacular, Pirates are criminals, Pirates are stupid. Then you summarize it:Pirates are all these things, and because of that will get their comeuppance in the end.
The only difference is this journey is fictionalized, with more drama, spectacle, and excitement that promote additional conclusions in the guests head: this place is mysterious, oh no where have we gone, it's okay the Pirates are dead, no threat, oh no the Pirates are alive and attacking, major threat, it's okay they're interested in other people, oh no the town is on fire and we're headed under the wreckage, etc, etc.

Sketches for Solara’a land #conceptdesign . You can see @ellacat11 doing some cameo appearances in a few of the drawings. The whole story behind the land is about balance/imbalance. Summer has taken over the seasons, proclaiming kingship and seducing all of its inhabitants to praise summer. Meanwhile, the other seasons conspire to restore balance to the region. In the land, the power is really on the hands of the guests. By virtue of participating on the tótem games spread across the land, players can align powers of specific seasons to trigger mini events, which eventually add together and trigger bigger events, changing for a few moments the look and ambience of land. Some art from a concept project I truly enjoyed. Our client was interested in a theme park that celebrated the adventure of the outdoors. We went several iterations, landing finally on a camp/ scouting themed design. This is from an earlier iteration... the main entrance.
