Hunger Games + YouTube comments again

anyway the idea of chaff/brutus hit me like a lightning strike six months ago and has been compelling me ever since. i hope it compels you as much as it compels me <3

I wonder how many volunteers ("Careers") have an immediate crushing realization that volunteering is a life or death thing the moment after it happens.

Like I'm sure so many of the Career tributes don't think much of it or are super over-confident the days leading up to it but imagine that first realization of mortality after it's official. They're going into the Hunger Games. They're looking at their District partner, who they will have to outlive, and they're seeing the other 22 tributes who'll be trying to outlive them, too.

That's such a horrifying concept bc, and I've said this before, they're all just babies. All of these kids, even the ones who are 18 or days away from 19, are babies. They shouldn't be having these sorts of thoughts but there's something especially heinous about the Careers, who've likely been indoctrinated with a lot of down-playing, overconfidence, shame tactics, etc to just 'not think about it too much' finally realizing they aren't immortal and this isn't a Game that just sings to me (it's a very sad song).

You're born in District Two. Your father is a stonemason. He wants more than masonry for you. You leave the village and train in the city. You play a lot of games. Swimming games, running games, and climbing games. You miss your parents, but they sent you here for a reason.

Your people understand sacrifice better than anyone. You learn to throw knives and wield a sword. You're not the fastest runner in your class but you are the best swimmer. You're so excited for the reaping; you're finally 12, so you get to stand in the pen with the big kids. You watch two big kids take the stage and stand near the victors. The volunteers—nothing is as noble as volunteering. A volunteer earns a lifetime of glory or a glorious death in the arena. The girl comes home that year, and she brings parcels of oil, grain, and chocolate. The boy is remembered forever.

Training gets more intense. You're up before dawn, and everything hurts all the time. They call you a contender. You'll be 18 for the 70th. That's your year. Again, again, again. You stand in the square and watch the volunteers step forward. You want to go so badly. You want Brutus or Lyme as your mentor.

You have one more year. The 70th is yours; you know it, and so does everyone else. You wonder who One and Four will send. Hopefully, they're strong but not smart. A girl trips you during a morning run. It was on purpose. Your wrist snaps back, broken. The screams can be heard all over the schoolhouse. You bash her head against a rock. Idiot.

The doctors say it won't heal well in time. You scream. There are other ways to earn glory, someone says. You don't hear them. You watch your replacement behead the boy from Four, and you watch the girl from Four outswim everyone else. That could have been you. That should have been you.

They're not going to waste your training. District Two is not wasteful. They send you to work in the mountain complex. The years pass. You get married. There's unrest somewhere. There's always unrest somewhere. Finnick Odair, Haymitch Abernathy, and Beetee Latier are on the TV talking about the fallen from District Two. They're traitors, but even they hold the fallen in high regard. District Four betrayed the Capitol. They'll be out of the alliance next year for sure. District One betrays the Capitol. It's good that District Two is staying loyal; your odds in the arena will be better. More parcels for those who need them.

And then Lyme is a traitor, too. The mountain comes down. What assignment did your husband's squad have? The screams don't stop. He's on ordnance, deep in the mountain. He's not getting out. Pipes burst and burn your skin. Someone drags you to the train.

Your hands are too burned to hold a gun. That idiot Katniss Everdeen is there. Someone shoots her and shuts her up. Your eyes close. Maybe this death isn't as glorious as an arena death, but you're still dying in defense of Panem. There is nothing as glorious.

this took a while, but here they are!!

little notes on them! i thought cashmere/gloss were twins, and I do still like that headcanon! brutus and enobaria both have broken noses, i think gloss would too, but his was properly reconstructed. cashmere has little ear piercing marks, and i had to give her a marilyn monroe mole

i do like the movie versions a lot, but beyond enobaria, i haven't gotten around to drawing how i imagine them currently (yes brutus is bald)

someone on Reddit pointed out that Beetee's second kid would be at reaping age starting in the 63rd games, the same games that Brutus won

meaning that Beetee could have lost his second kid and Wiress to the same person

🎃Trick or Treat!👻

for this trick or treat i will be treating you to a neat little trick I have of making headcanons! the theme is what the thg characters would major in. i blanked for a lot of characters because as you can imagine i mostly think about either my knife princess or characters who are important to the fics i write about my knife princess.

@sangrefae said katniss would major in biology and i believe that as a bio major myself. katniss would enjoy anything that gets her out in nature. my school offers some amazing programs with opportunities to research urban ecosystems or explore biodiversity or whatever and i think kat would appreciate such outdoor adventures.

according to @sangrefae aka the knower of gale, he would pursue a trade probably

i lowkey mostly just see peeta in his lil bakery lol but i read a really good everlark fic where he was a college wrestler. if anyone has good ideas about what he'd major in let me know. maybe art or something? business on the side so he can take over the family bakery I guess.

okay moving on to the ACTUAL important characters (kidding but. am I?), my babe clove is gonna go premed because she would fit right in with a scalpel in her hand and I just like to project on her. either that or nursing because i can also see her in that role where she is super competitive about providing good patient care and enjoys the adrenaline rush of an ER (or a prison because they have nurses there too and one of my clato aus has their meet cute set when he's behind bars and she's the facility's nurse). but anyways something STEM and healthcare related. she and cato actually meet in a kinesiology class!

for cato i see him as going either the kinesiology or classics route. the first is about physical activity and is sports-related and involves some anatomy which gives him and clove common ground/a good meet-cute and also transfers very well with what I imagine canonverse district two would teach. as for the second, i myself love my intro to ancient rome class and i feel like with cato's name he just has to lean into the bit!! history itself is very interesting and i can see cato enjoying the lore and violence/warfare/combat specifically.

brutus and enobaria are very kinesiology/nutrition majors coded to me because they are sooooo no-nonsense gym coaches. @atefingersdagger wrote about Lyme as a nurse practitioner or midwife (?) i believe in one of her fics so Lyme would be a good fit for nursing school too (maybe she and clove meet at a hospital when clove is a student!) i can also see all of the d2 characters enlisting for a military branch like the navy or something because they appreciate the disciplined rigor and also want their education to get paid for.

for the d1 kiddos, marvel reminds me of this one kid who lives in the student apartment complex that's a pretty solid walk down the street but he's always hanging out in my dorm's lounge and sleeps on the couch there. so marvel will be a communications major just like this couch crashing guy who has similar vibes. i would put glimmer in cosmetology school because she has the same energy as tansy truitt on hart of dixie. cashmere is a beauty and fitness influencer on social media with her brother gloss who is her director/video editor and works as a personal trainer. (I'm not trying to imply that any of the d1 kids are dumb or anything but i really don't see them doing the traditional 4 year college degree plan like. none of them have the vibes that they would willingly do that. and college isn't the correct path for everybody, etc etc).

foxface is from district 5 so maybe she's an electrical engineering major if i connected those two correctly. my uni has a textiles and apparel major which would be good for District 8 characters i guess, and also people like cinna or effie. a school that's a few hours away from mine (and a rival too lol) has a robust agriculture sciences program that the d10/d11 kiddos could potentially be a good fit for (i'm talking about the districts in general and not any of the individual characters). i'm not entirely sure what thresh and rue/seeder and chaff would major in so if anyone has ideas about that sound off in the notes

moving on to other characters: wiress and beetee would either go computer science or ECE (those are the two tech-y majors I know of), i wrote annie as a marine biology major for one of my fics and made finnick a part time model in that one but we could have him do marine bio as well. someone in the notes of a previous post i made (comment to claim credit) said plutarch would be a philosophy/poli sci major which absolutely checks out, and then cressida would get a radio/tv/film degree.
