anyway the idea of chaff/brutus hit me like a lightning strike six months ago and has been compelling me ever since. i hope it compels you as much as it compels me <3

Chaff was SO close to escaping the arena btw, Haymitch could’ve had his best friend with him during his stay at thirteen.

They could’ve partially gotten sober together btw, he could’ve had his best friend there with him btw.

But no, Chaff dies just before he could escape. And Haymitch is alone in thirteen, or well, alone in the sense he doesn’t have his Chaff with him.

Yeah so what I’m saying is that Chaff should’ve lived-

Hunger Games au but Thresh is a victor from another year. It would be super interesting, especially considering how he refuses to ‘play’ the game.

another codependent victor combo we don't get much of in the books: Haymitch and Chaff. Their dynamic seemed to have gone deeper than Katniss perceived, and the two of them really interest me.

Oooo this one is going to get into a lot more of headcanon territory for me but im here for it!!! Sorry for late responses i totally forgot to check my inbox

This is actually something I talked about bit about with my friend (go check out cashmeresknife !! Shes twin and so cool!!) but i definitely think their friendship started sometime within Haymitch’s first few times being a mentor. Id say Chaff is in his early-mid 20s by the time Haymitch is mentoring for the first time at 17 (depending on how old he was when he won) and, while all victors have their vices, Chaff appears to be more open about his drinking like Haymitch is . Which you could say Haymitch influenced him into, but given their ages im more under the impression Chaff influenced Haymitch more than we ever see (Haymitch does have that sprinkle of dry humor in sotr but id like to think he partly got it from Chaff they r legit the same person)

This is where it gets kinda messy, but I think Chaff enabled Haymitch and in turn they both started to enable each other. Haymitch is someone who is very defensive about his unhealthy coping mechanisms (drinking) which is something we see in the trilogy . I think people (esp Effie in the early years) ever mentioning his problem would make him incredibly defensive especially when all the trauma from the arena is still so new. Chaff being someone who doesn’t try and stop him and instead relates to him would be very influential in that first.. Honestly probably decade if im being honest.

Diving into some less canon compliant stuff. First of all, oh my god that viewing room fuckign REEKS when they are watching their tributes. Genuine insanity. Other victors have had to yell at them to get their shit together more than once . And more often than not they end up in a room together completely blackout after the first few days of the Games . That room legit smells like a frat house like it gets bad . But they are both laughing and carrying on because if they don’t laugh they’d probably try and do something worse .

Also they’ve definitely had to help each other throw up more than once. Nothing says codependent friendship like two 20-30 something year olds huddled together on a bathroom floor (privately or at a party, your choice.)

And, most controversially, they have definitely hooked up at least once . Haymitch is Bi to me and it just adds another layer to their weird alcoholic codependency . Haymitch hates being vulnerable after his games so the morning after was a shit show.

Hayffie week day seven: Them being goofy/crack

The only time I could imagine them really goofy was getting drunk with their friends/ the other victors. I imagine some of the victors really being like a family like protecting the younger ones (Finnick, Annie) or Mags being the mum of the group and the ones that were the same age would be acting like siblings (like Chaff and Haymitch)they‘ll go out, get drunk, play games, have sleepovers stuff like that u know. Effie‘s an honorary member cause she‘s the only reason Haymitch‘s leaving the apartment.
