A heartwarming love confession given over the phone broken up halfway through. There was nothing to indicate it would happen, no scream or loud sound, just the connection dropping out of nowhere. A call back is sent to voicemail. Searching for them yields no results.

And that’s it. There is no conclusion, no poetic irony, no tragic last line. Just a dropped call, a person whose fate will never be known and a world that will never find closure.

ive seen several fics now that revolve around Grace growing old and dying on Erid and rocky grieving for him, but im captivated by the idea of something going wrong and Rocky dying first. like. even if he spent most of his time surrounded by Astrophage on the blip-a, rocky was still probably bombarded by radiation anytime he left his workshop for the ~50 years he was up there. what if it catches up to him. what if grace gives up Earth to save rocky and rocky dies on the way back to erid anyway. what if the blip-a makes it to erid and it’s sole living inhabitant is a leaky space blob of an alien who is sick and starving and nearly out of his mind with grief because he chose to sacrifice himself this time and it still wasnt enough to save the one person who mattered the most. what if your best friend was supposed to make it home to his mate and his people and outlive you by several hundred years, but now he’ll never get the chance because you didn’t turn around fast enough.
