They all start clustering around her legs and feet all crowding her and trying to hug her. Her tail starts to wag and she bends down to wrap her arms around as many as she can.

Me: you know, in a way Dean had to die to be free. Not from a narrative perspective, but from our perspective. In order for him to truly escape, his textual fate had to be so horrible that we not just hoped but believed with absolute conviction that it never happened. No other ending would have caused this. Dean died in the eyes of the author to become real in ours.
