"I'm not what I think I am, I'm not what you think I am, I'm what I think you think I am"
- Thomas Cooley
What does this quote by Cooley mean, "I'm not what I think I am, I'm not what you think I am, I'm what I think you think I am"?
In 1975, Julian Jaynes (in The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind) promoted the revolutionary idea that consciousness is not a personal interior awareness we can use to make decisions and judgments, but a modeling system for the behavior and actions of others: an essential part of the brain machinery of a social species. Although Jaynes admitted that we have no access to the information needed to prove this theory, recent research could support his thesis, as summarized by Chris Paley in 2014’s Unthink.
Paley argues that to function socially we need a model of ourselves that roughly responds to how others are modeling us. Or, as Canadian poet Thomas Cooley put it more confusingly in 1992: “I am not who you think I am; I am not who I think I am; I am who I think you think I am.”

scared straight
They should make a version of Scared Straight where prospective college students meet with people in their late 20's who are buried in student debt the rest of their lives, who try to persuade the kids not repeat their mistakes. The 18 yr old kids walk in and the 28 yr olds start screaming at them "YOU SERIOUSLY THINK YOU'RE GONNA GET HIRED WITH A HUMANITIES DEGREE FROM SOME SHIT UNIVERSITY!!!!", "HOW IN THE FUCKING HELL DO YOU PLAN TO PAY OFF YOUR STUDENT DEBT WORKING MINIMUM WAGE???", "YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PAY FOR YOUR KIDS' COLLEGE WHEN YOU ARE STILL PAYING OFF YOUR OWN DAMN COLLEGE", "YOU KNOW STUDENT DEBT CAN'T BE DISCHARGED IN BANKRUPTCY, CAPICE???", "YOU WANT DEBT COLLECTORS TO CALL YOUR HOUSE 10 TIMES A DAY???", "OH, YOU GOT GOOD GRADES IN HIGH SCHOOL, AREN'T YOU FUCKING SPECIAL!!!", "YOU HAD YOUR PARENTS CO-SIGN YOUR LOANS, WHY DO YOU HATE YOU HATE YOUR PARENTS???"
A law school version of this show would be the most intense, like some young newly-minted BAs walk in and some former law students get in their face like "YOU'RE HONESTLY GONNA TAKE OUT A 120K LOAN TO ATTEND TOURO/COOLEY/JOHN MARSHALL/ETC , YOU'RE SHITTING ME RIGHT!!!", "YOU KNOW HOW MANY JDS CAN'T EVEN GET JOBS AS A LAWYER, AND HOW MANY NON-LAW JOBS DON'T WANT TO HIRE JDS, SO JUST KILL YOURSELF NOW!!!" "YOU'RE GONNA BE DOING SHITLAW OR DOC REVIEW THE REST OF YOUR PATHETIC LIFE", "OH, YOU GOT A 3.4 IN COLLEGE, YOU MUST BE LAW REVIEW MATERIAL, THEN!!!", "YOU KNOW LAW SCHOOL DOESN'T PREPARE YOU TO PASS THE BAR OR EVEN TO BE A LAWYER!!!!", "OMFG, YOU'RE ATTENDING COOLEY, HOLY SHIT, THAT'S PRACTICALLY YALE!!!". Damn, this has me scared straight and I just typed it, not experienced it, so I will not be attending law school, never ever ever ever.
