the first few weeks in paradise are not the greatest. gally spends most of his time watching everyone else from afar, chopping wood for the cabins he’s been in charge of building reminding him too much of the glade and everything from /before/, watching minho give order after order as everyone just…goes to him begging for something to do to keep busy (1/?)

and they try their hardest not to fall into their old routine but it’s difficult bc it’s almost exactly the same save for they don’t have to constantly worry about every little thing every second of their timed lives bc they’re free now, free and alive and safe. gally’s been waiting for this for years, ever since his arrival in the glade and when he sees the parallels between their old lives and their new, he just wants to break them all. he aches from all of the loss they’ve all had to deal with and he takes it out in the middle of the woods with raw knuckles meeting splintering tree trunks and salty tears staining flushed cheeks. he’s not a loud crier but he is an ugly one. his body racks and his eyes puff red and his throat becomes so scratchy it sounds like he’s been drinking sawdust but he spends an hour or two after these little (re: big) fits calming himself down and washing up in the nearby lake, until the reflection staring back at him is something he can bare to look at for another day. and one day during one of these episodes thomas comes stumbling out from behind a large tree too quick for gally to attempt to cover the evidence of him showing /some/ of his humanity and thomas isn’t helpful at all. he tries hiding his awkwardness behind a stiff laugh and retreats until he trips over his own feet, lands on his ass in front of the tree he emerged from. he bends as close as he can get into thomas’ face, just a mere breath apart, and spits out horrid words full of emptiness and defeat. he tries to make them ruthless, tries to be his old self but it doesn’t happen and he slouches forward, presses his forehead to thomas’ in acceptance and sobs, spittle flying into thomas’ face before he rolls over and lays beside thomas. body shaking and curling in on itself. thomas doesn’t move for quite awhile, until the sun peaks over the canopy of the tree leaves above, and still does he only grab gally’s hand tentatively and squeezes lightly. gally lets him. and he lets thomas thread his fingers through gally’s and he lets thomas pull him out of the dirt and into his arms and he lets thomas let /him/ release everything he’s been keeping bottled up for as long as he can remember. they only part when a younger voice calls out for them just as the sun is starting to set and while gally had stopped crying long ago, he hadn’t moved from thomas’ arms and thomas didn’t really want him to. and when they make their way back to the others gally brushes thomas off as soon as they’re in everyone else’s sight and thomas rolls his eyes, but catches the small smile gally shoots him from across the fire during dinner and he just knows it’s all going to be okay
