no thoughts, head empty
It’s Jan 26 and I happen to be on Tumblr, so here’s Anthem, by Tiddas, the first thing that taught me both that Indigenous peoples are systematically oppressed and something was fucked about nationalism.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2zhs8ZAt1g
This song is directly responsible for the time I got in trouble for not singing the Anthem in second grade.
“MOVE, SLUTS.”
I had no idea that this acoustic version existed, but it is ALSO the only version that exists on Youtube (as far as I, an American, can see - Australians can probably access Inside My Kitchen in its entirety on plenty of streaming platforms), and this is a song that I can listen to on repeat for hours without tire. And I think I've said this before on this blog, but this is one of those VITAL decolonial songs that needs to be on any good decolonization playlist - it is PERFECT in that respect. But it's also gorgeous in general - Tiddas' harmonies are, of course (as always), absolute perfection, and the folk rock quality musically feels utterly timeless.
I just discovered an Indigenous band of all women from Australia, Tiddas, who performed indie/folk rock and I’m listening to their first EP Inside My Kitchen (1992) and I can’t even find every song on the EP on Youtube but what I’ve found so far is basically making me cry. It’s literally so fucking beautiful that I’m crying, okay. Oh my GOD.
And because I wanted to learn more about them, I found this article, too, and another article about Lou Bennett (the sole songwriter of the song “Inside My Kitchen”) specifically.
I love Tiddas. 💚💚💚💚💚
