My Thoughts on Several Tim/Masky Ships

(Buckle in y’all it’s a long one)

Tim/Brian (Brim): Starting off strong with PEAK. This is probably one of my all time favorite ships even outside of Creepypasta/Marble hornets. There is barely any onscreen content of them, leaving most of their relationship and dynamic up for the fans to decide—which is a win for me. I really do think Tim was the awkward lonely guy in college that Brian just so happened to adopt into his circle. I mean—he was only part of the Marble Hornets film because he happened to accompany Brian to his audition. (So they could go get dinner together after, mind you.) Tim consistently mentions the fact that Brain was one of his first friends, one of his only real friends, and clearly holds him in high regard. Their interactions in entry #54 are also very cute and could easily be read as playful yet slightly flirty banter. If you look at it the right way, they can be a sun/moon ship as well as an all around great bromance. (And oh how I adore idiot bromances.) None of that takes into account the fact that they are completely and utterly doomed by the narrative. One of them dies yea, but everything that leads up to that is brutal as well. It’s just so JJFDVVDSRUKV. So fucking delicious this ship was sent from the heavens. (12/10)

-Hoodie/Masky (Hoodsky?): Wanted to get this one out of the way while we’re on the subject of Brian and Tim. Yes technically they’re the same people, but the mental state of each of ‘em are so different they might as well be separate characters. I also wanna touch on their creepypasta counterparts! These two are a pair for a hot minute in Marble Hornets. Some of the most important scenes in the series are the ones in which they work together. And this shows in how they were later portrayed in the creepypasta fandom! Neither of them made nearly as much headway in their goal of killing of Alex than when they were being a team. Generally, they’ve done a lot together off screen, so that lends itself to a lot of shipping fuel. Unfortunately that also makes it hard to say where Masky specifically stands with Hoodie, but he is willing to work with the guy. It’s also possible that Masky knew Hoodie’s identity, and I can very easily see a situation in which Masky feels similarly to how Tim felt about Brian but with Hoodie instead occurring. They’re also just an easy starter pair to ship for pre-teens in the 2010s creepypasta fandom due to their proximity, lmao. (8/10)

Tim/Hoodie: This is the last Brian adjacent one I swear. Hoodie is kinda sorta stalking Tim at moments, so there’s that beloved obsessive stalker trope. On Tim’s end at least, he just has this seemingly random man stalking him and stealing his pills. Him not knowing it’s actually Brian can definitely lead to some interesting angst. You could very easily argue that Hoodie knows they used to be friends, and knows full well who Tim is. Intimately so, considering he leaked his medical records to Jay. (He even redacted information from it for Tim’s sake despite hating him.) So you get that obsessive stalker who has deeply personal knowledge of their victim + past history that adds complexity to the relationship. Tim’s grief after Hoodie’s death is the cherry on top. By that point, his feelings are more complicated because he knew who Hoodie was. He even goes as far as to suggest he would’ve acted differently had he known Hoodie was Brian. He also acknowledges the fact that Hoodie was only a shell of himself, thus recognizing the sort of mental state he was in at the time. I can very easily see Tim forgiving Hoodie for the grief he caused him, and he probably went back and rewatched all the old TotheArk videos after his passing. Just so he could see all the clues and then hate himself for not putting it together sooner. It’s a very angsty ship the bulk of which hinges on Tim and Brian’s previous relationship, and I like that. (9/10)

-Tim/Jay (Jam): Might as well discuss the other big one. I am aware that I recently made a post saying I didn’t get Jam, but I have since rewatched all of season three and have been enlightened by my beloved moots. (Thanks briefcase <3) In MH, Tim goes out of his way to care for Jay. Even after that idiot (affectionate) has done his fair share of fucking up Tim’s life, he still comes back to work with him and goes as far as sharing his super important medication with him. Taking into account that a lot of their scenes have a sort of tension that easily lends itself to shipping fuel, and you have a recipe for doomed yaoi. When Jay dies, the grief Tim feels is tangible. Watching him after this point in the series is genuinely so depressing—it hits me so hard every damn time. And the fact that things could’ve ended better if only Jay hadn’t ran into the Operator that final time in Rosswood… There’s so many layers to them you could pick it all apart for hours. It’s definitely a fun ship. (8/10)

-Tim/Alex (Timlex?): I never see much about this ship, but I’m almost certain it exists so why not talk about it. These two definitely have the enemies to lovers toxic yaoi thing going on, and people definitely lean into that. (I think that’s a major factor in why people like it, lmao.) They never seem to get along when they’re onscreen together outside of their very first meeting (which was pretty awkward not gonna lie). But, in their final fight, it is worth noting that Tim does try to help Alex by way of urging him to separate himself from the Operator and even offers to help Alex because he knows how to fight it. They then proceed to kill each other, but Tim did try! But of course, the main appeal of this ship is definitely how they fight and bicker, and all the times Tim has attempted to kill Alex (and vice versa) before he actually succeeded. The tension is fun, but I think this ship lacks some of the emotional substance I like in my ships. (4/10)

-Tim/Skully (Skullmask?): I stumbled upon this one in the making of this post and now I’m wondering how I’ve never considered it. Skully seems to be their own entity whilst also being an amalgamation of all those who ended up in the Ark. In theory, there are aspects of Jay, Brian, and Alex within them, and I think that would take some of the burden off of Tim’s shoulders. (After he gets over the crisis this would cause him.) It would definitely be a painful relationship in this regard because Tim would constantly be reminded of his failures to save the people he cares about. Meanwhile Skully would probably only be hanging around because they perceive Tim as being ‘broken.’ Tim is just over here pinning and grieving and longing for the ones he loved back whilst Skully doesn’t reciprocate any of it emotionally and simply wants Tim to join their ranks so he can be fixed. It’s deliciously angsty even if I don’t think there’d ever be a formal relationship. (9/10)

-Tim/Toby (Ticcimask): I covered this one in my Toby ships post, but I have more to say about it and it’s wildly popular in certain parts of the creepypasta fandom specifically, so I’m talking about it again. (It is by far the ship that popped up the most when I was looking for ships to cover.) People seem to like it because Toby and fanon Masky had that very particular dynamic wherein Toby annoys the shit out of Masky and Masky just hated him for it. Personally, that is not a dynamic I have ever liked. To me, Masky always came off as genuinely hating/getting annoyed with Toby without there being any harbored affection underneath his reactions. And again, at least due to the way I see the characters, there is an age and maturity gap there I just can’t get behind. Not to mention how so often this ship strays into incest and pseudo-incest territory wayyy too often for my tastes. It’s not my thing and I probably won’t be talking about it again. (-1/10)

-Tim/Brian/Jay: I haven’t really seen this ship much but I like ending these off with the polyamorous and/or crack ships I’ve made up. This one is fun because it’s both Tim’s stalkers and then Tim himself jammed in the middle. Either way, the man is probably being filmed and/or watched at any given time, and I just know he’s tired of it. In college I don’t think there would’ve been as much to this one—most of it definitely would be during the course of Marble Hornets itself. So it would be more like Tim/Hoodie/Jay but whatever. This ship would be especially interesting in an AU where Tim and Jay manage to discover Hoodie’s identity early on. Otherwise he would likely be very inactive in the relationship and probably only appear when it suited him. It would definitely just be Tim and Jay most of the time. (But oh how Tim misses Brian.) Most of the potential here definitely stems from aus because I really don’t see it happening in cannon, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just means you have to play around a bit to see its full potential. There will definitely be more on this one in future posts. (5/10)
