tip tuesday: the flyfish (and how to krill them!)

an overview on the flyfish:

the flyfish is one of, if not, the most hated boss salmonids in the salmon run salmonpedia. this flying smallfry shoots out a total of eight tentamissiles across the map. their armor is impervious to ink and so, must be taken out by the use of bombs chucked into their missile launchers.

method one: the casual (bombs)

the usual method is to obviously chuck bombs at the launchers. be careful as to not get too close or too far away, and get to a high inkable area as to avoid the hordes of salmon by the shoreline. throw your first bomb into the right launcher first, as that launcher directs the person in front of it (or the person closest to it.) refuel and launch the other bomb at the remaining launcher. it can be soloed in one go, but it's better to do it with teammates.

method two: weaponry

certain weapons can help with taking out flyfish faster:

explosher: acts the same as bombs. fire the explosher at the launchers to instantly take them out. repeat the same steps of preparation as the first method for the best results.

grizzco splatana: charge up your weapon to cut through any type of surface. you have to aim upwards and move forward towards the flyfish in order to reach the salmonid inside. you need to fend off salmon and also avoid the sludge water, as the splatana isn't easy to stop.

grizzco slosher: the slosher can penetrate any surface with its slosh. fire at the pilot once to krill the flyfish, but save the other three for salmon population control.

method three: specials

the specials are efficient in krilling most bosses, however they are limited to two a round (excluding the one refill in the xtra rounds) and some don't penetrate the forces.

the specials that can krill flyfish: inkjet, crabtank (both need to be used as explosher), triple inkstrike, kraken (to an extent), triple splashdown(?), killer wail 5.1, booyah bomb

the specials that dont: wave breaker, reefslider

method four: cohock sweep*

cohock rounds are by far the easiest way to take out any type of salmonid, but be careful. you can't dodge missiles while within the cannon. if you aim in the middle of the launchers, you can take out both of them at the same time with one shot. if not, then just aim for one at a time. if you get targeted, run away from the launcher and maybe get some eggs in before going back and manning the launcher.

method five: salmonid treason

flyfish can be killed with other salmonids, although its very rare to do so. one method is to make a slamming lid crash on top of the flyfish by either baiting the slamming lid or splatting the slamming lid. another method is to use good ol' joe and make him eat the flyfish by baiting him near the flyfish. however, you also need to lure the slamming lid close to the flyfish and not get splat by the jets of the flyfish or any other salmonid.

extra tips:

to find a flyfish in the fog, follow where the arrows come from when you're targeted. if you're not targeted, follow the opposite of where the missiles launch are coming from.

to avoid flyfish missiles, hide under grates and other objects. if you can't find a place to hide, swim and dodge the missiles.

each missile reload takes five to seven seconds, depending on if they need to relocate the machine or not to get away from you. mostly they just hover in one place.

with multiple flyfish on the loose, it is recommended to use a killer wail 5.1 special to get rid of all the missiles. you need to get to at least the third round in order to not lose any points.

Tip Tuesday: Mama Hiddles Tips Volume #1

Hello my little strudels. I am back.  Sort of.  I am easing back into things.  And I thought I would start with some tips for life, writing, and what not.  So here we go.

1. When it comes to writing, don’t force it. There is a difference between pushing through a block and just flat out forcing something that isn’t working.  It is not going to be good. And then you are going to feel bad about that.  There is no shame in abandoning an idea or just shelving it for a time.  

2. You can’t please everyone all the time.  Seriously, don’t try. You will only be disappointed and frustrated. The most important person to please is yourself.  Which means write what you want, read what you want to read, and your blog is your own.  

3. It cost nothing to be a decent, kind person. It takes no effort to not leave a nasty comment, or make someone feel worse about themselves.  It also takes little effort to be positive, to say something nice, and to be kind. So why choose to be nasty.

4. Numbers don’t matter, except they do.  Numbers are more.  It is so easy to say they don’t when you getting numbers and comments. But for writers and artists, each comment and reblog is such a form of validation. So don’t underestimate what it means.  

5. Life is too short. Life is too short to not be doing what you want.  Yes we have certain things we have to do... jobs, school, chores, etc.  But in those free hours, do what you want! Write the fic, draw the pic, read the story, etc. And for fuck’s sake, don’t let the haters get you down.

Tip Tuesday | Translations

We’re fortunate as classicists that so many texts have survived the centuries. They give us valuable insight into the everyday lives of ancient (usually elite) citizens and their perceptions of their world. 

Reading these texts in their original language, however, isn’t always possible. I’ve been studying Classics at a university level for six years, and even as a PhD candidate, I’m not ashamed to admit that I still regularly rely on translations of the ancient texts in my research. For me personally, there are two main reasons why. First, while I have a minor in Latin and regularly study the language, I simply do not have the necessary skills built up to read the original texts cover to cover, especially without a commentary. It takes years to develop any level of fluency and confidence, and I’ve only completed two years of formal study. So, translating even short passages takes up a lot of time; I tend to save translating for excerpts I am actively using in research. Second, I can’t read any Ancient Greek. At all. I’m starting to work on the alphabet, but that’s about all I have time for at the moment. I simply didn’t have the room for it in my Bachelor because I double majored. This didn’t change when I did Honours or when I started my PhD - focusing on Latin was a better use of the few electives I was allowed, as I am first and foremost a Roman historian. 

Translations, then, are an incredibly valuable resource for Classicists at all levels - but you have to find the right ones. You can’t simply throw some Latin into Google and expect to get a good - or even readable - result. Let’s take a look at an example. I put Propertius 1.1 through Google Translate, and this is what it came up with:

O, whose deceit moon    and work with magical alter fire,  Come on mind,    And what do sacrard more! to you, then I'll believe in ghosts and the stars,    Cytinean songs. It’s a bit of a disaster, isn’t it? Let’s compare the Google translation to one by Katz (1995):

Cynthia was the first. She caught me with her eyes, a fool who had never before been touched by desires. I really hung my head in shame when Love pressed down on it with his feet. He taught me to hate chaste girls! He was cruel when he told me to live without plan. It's already been a whole year that the frenzy hasn't stopped. Even now, the gods are against me.

Another time, shocked by a wound from Hylaeus' stick, he groaned loudly on the Arcadian cliffs. But in me Love is slow, does not stimulate any art, and he forgets to go on ways he used to know You who do that trick with the moon, who perform rites on magic altars, change my mistress' mind, make her face more pale than my own! Then I'll believe in you, that you can lead stars and Medea's streams from their paths with songs.

But you, who called me too late as I was slipping, friends, get help for the insane. Bravely will I endure knife and savage fires, just let me say whatever I want in my rage. Take me to exotic peoples, across the waves, where no woman may know my path. You stay, to whom the god has easily consented, stay equal always, throughout your love. On me old Venus works bitter nights, and Love is at no time absent.

Don't do what I do, I'm warning you. Keep to yourself, don't move from an accustomed love. Because if anyone should turn slow ears to my warnings, you'll see how they'll come back to haunt him!

I don’t think I need to tell you which version is the better option, especially when we’re fortunate that so many quality translations are freely available online. Here are just a few resources:

Perseus Digital Library A large catalogue of ancient texts, both in the original Latin or Greek, and in translation.

LacusCurtis Includes a photosampler of Roman and Etruscan cities and monuments; a site for teaching yourself to read Latin inscriptions; a collection of complete Latin texts; several complete Greek texts in the original Greek; a selection of secondary source texts; some maps of the Roman Empire, and lots more.

Loebolus “Loebolus is based on Edwin Donnelly's “Downloebables” , aiming to make all the public domain Loebs more easily downloadable by re-hosting the PDF's directly, without the need to enter CAPTCHA's.”

Attalus   “This site contains detailed lists of events and sources for the history of the Hellenistic world and the Roman republic. It includes links to online translations of many of the sources, as well as new translations of some works which have not previously been easily available in English."

eBooks@Adelaide Contains a large variety of out of copyright primary source texts and translations in an easy to read format. 

Tips for using translations:

With every translation, be aware that the translator may be taking some artistic liberties. Often, this is subtle, such as using ‘flowery’ language, but it could also be a significant change, such as using rhyming language in poetry. This is particularly concerning when it comes to Latin translations, as Latin poets purposely avoided rhyming.

Partner your study with a commentary. Commentaries often give insight into the historical contexts of the text and discuss contentious words, making them valuable for broadening your understanding of the text.

Don’t be afraid to ask a mentor such as a lecturer if there are translations they prefer. Often, they’ll know which are reliable and/or faithful to the original text.
