I'm genuinely so tired of the Infantilization in the fandom and the blatant and intentional mischaracterization of characters.

Every Single Ghoul is Implied To Canonically Be Adults.

Rui Runs a Bar on campus. A BAR.

And I know someone is going to say "But It's said in canon that the drinks aren't alcohol tho".

IIRC it's stated that the anomalous drink mixtures Rui serves have similar effects on the body to alcohol.

Haru and Romeo are regulars at the bar meaning they both are at minimum 20 years old. The legal drinking age and smoking age in Japan is 20 according to my research. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Jin and Tohma are confirmed to smoke.

Sho has been shown in official art to hold a full cocktail glass. Specifically in his card "Nightscape Cocktail". If ZigZa wanted to specify he was younger than the legal drinking age the EN translation team would have used Mocktail instead.

Also When [Redacted] teases Sho about him going through a rebellious phase it's meant to be Demeaning and Infantilizing towards Sho. Sho is an adult who makes his own choices. It's not an actual observation made by [Redacted] about Sho.

And the mischaracterization? Horrendous.

Ren isn't some teen who's going through a grumpy lil grouch phase. He's a grown man.

Kaito isn't some Nervous Teen Boy having his first crush. He's an anxious and inexperienced grown man who makes questionable (albeit funny) choices. His growth from seeing MC as just some Hot Girl he wants to date, to genuinely being her friend and caring about her. Gives him more depth than half the fandom wants to admit.

And don't even get me started on Lyca and Towa being treated like toddlers.

But genuinely it's every single character in this fandom I've seen get mischaracterized, not just the ones I've given examples for.

And I understand occasionally having characters be mischaracterized in fanfic, and having slight skews in general fandom perception from canon.

But it's bad when a character's mischaracterization becomes a general fandom belief/ headcanon for that character.

(Ex: 2020's Danganronpa Girlboss/Bimbo Junko, MHA Soft UWU baby cinnamon roll Izuku Midoriya, etc)

darkwick is such a good reflection of today's economy and society like the rich get richer (frostheim getting a fuck ton of funds) the poor getting poorer (jabberwock and mortkranken struggling to get by) and the people are so oblivious and don't even try to do something about all the crises (general students believing gossip in wickhive than actually doing something or investigating) and the government is hella biased and doesn't help those in need but instead help those in "need" (Darkwick doing absolutely nothing to ensure students safety and choosing to help certain housed that probably don't even need help) also the extreme discrimination against people who are different (discrimination against ghouls and anomalies) also they are picky about who they discriminate like lyca is called a freak and so is alan but everyone fawns over haku and rui even though they are practically the same. Could be exaggerating tho

IDK but I've always felt like people who hate characters like Haku, Leo, Jin, Hyde or Shion can be pretty hypocritical. Especially when they say they hate Leo and Jin but love Haku or Shion. Same goes for people who hate Taiga and Ed.

Like... are we even playing the same game? We literally have the perspective of a god as the player and some people still miss the subtext.

Personally, I don't even like Leo or Jin but that's because of their personalities and how they react to certain situations. As characters, I think they're really interesting. Leo especially has so much deep lore going on that we haven't even gotten to explore yet.

It's also funny when people say Leo would totally be the type of influencer to use generative AI. His entire story revolves around hating the rich and systematically scamming predatory old rich men. He despises Darkwick's hierarchy and probably only enrolled to dig up dirt on the institution. He hates being associated with the elite, so why would he support a product created by billionaire corporations that exploit people and resources? Tell me you skipped the story without telling me you skipped the story. 

As for Jin, I think he's another deep lore character whose execution suffers because ZZG hasn't done the best job of conveying his concept yet. That's disappointing but I also think a lot of the hate comes from how popular he is, how much ZZG pushes him, and the fact that he's from an elite bloodline. People judge him before trying to understand his character as a whole.

And I can understand disliking Jin. But then some people decide they hate Frostheim, so they automatically hate Luca and Kaito too. (I love Yuri and my baby used to be a Frostheim also, not everybody is the same that's what I'm trying to say but many people are not ready for that conversation.)

...Why?

Those two have barely any information available. We know very little about Luca and even Kaito still has plenty left unexplored.

Hyde and Elias. We know practically nothing about either of them.

Hyde barely has enough information for anyone to know what's actually going on with him or the Institute, yet people are already determined to make him the villain.

Elias has technically been around for a long time, but we've barely gotten to know him, and people have already written entire villain arcs for him in their heads.

And hating Ed while liking Taiga is also kind of funny because they operate on very similar concepts and methods. I love Taiga but let's not pretend everything he does is okay. The man literally pointed a gun at MC. I'd put that on the same level as Jin throwing the ashtray. MC could've gotten hurt regardless of how "careful" the ghouls think they were being.

At that point, just write fanfiction instead of treating your headcanons like canon. I was genuinely confused when I first joined this fandom because of how much people villainized these characters when we barely have any information about them.

Maybe it's the influence of short form content, but it feels like people don't want to read between the lines anymore. They want everything spoon-fed to them.

People always say they love layered and morally complicated characters.

But some of them can't even handle Jin, Shion, Leo, Taiga or Ed, and those characters aren't even that difficult to understand. ZZG just hasn't revealed everything yet because their backstories would probably spoil the main plot.

You want MC to talk back to people with supernatural powers who could literally fold her like a lawn chair? 😭

And no one's talking about the fact that, by the 1/4 of season 1, she already knows she'll either die or get terminated by Darkwick if a year passes and she still can't cure her curse. She's basically walking on eggshells every single day.

Taiga tells her about the spy situation, she's heard rumors about the Clash and Darkwick is practically a warzone. She can't even leave and she has no idea who she can actually trust. Even when she doesn't want to help Darkwick, she doesn't really have a choice.

Did you even get to the part where you can choose not to go on the mission? Hyde literally asks if you're sure, and Cornelius straight up tells her she has no choice but to follow orders. Moby doesn't even let her get a word in half the time. So if people won't even listen to her, what exactly is she supposed to do?

She sees herself as nothing more than an ordinary person who got dragged into a complete mess full of monsters, conspiracies and people way out of her league, while having her normal life ripped away from her. She's not a born hero or some fearless leader. She's just a normal woman. What exactly do you expect a normal person to do in that situation?

I do agree that her writing has flaws but I think that's more because of the game's approach than the character herself. A lot of gacha games keep the protagonist fairly neutral so players can self-insert, which means they avoid giving the MC too much of a defined personality or backstory early on. And with Kyklos calling her a queen, it's pretty obvious there's a much bigger mystery behind her. Going too deep into her lore now would probably spoil the main story so I can understand why they're holding back.

As for people complaining that she apologizes too much or feels bad all the time, god forbid someone with low self-esteem, insecurity, social anxiety and awkwardness exists. That's just part of her character. It's not "annoying kindness." It's how she processes the world around her, especially when every decision could mean the difference between living and dying.

When you're completely out of your depth and surrounded by monsters that could kill you in seconds, are you going to trust the people who actually know how to fight them, or are you gonna grab a baseball bat and square up with a ghost? 😭

i have never found the appeal in haku or jin, and i don't understand why jin especially is one of the most popular characters. haku doesn't share shit with us and i feel like i barely know him. he's literally so suspicious and his haircut sucks balls. i get that people like the whole princess and flirty thing but he still feels like a stranger two seasons in.

jin is emotionally constipated like he does not know how to talk to women. he calls mc a freaking servant?? girl that is not romantic idk what you're talking about. she's not your stupid maid. and he acted like a child when mc didn't go to him for the kyklos mission, throwing a temper tantrum or whatever when SHES LITERALLY DYING. i can't imagine doing that to a girl who knows she's dying in just a few weeks, calling her pathetic as if it's her fault for not asking him.

i'm forever an mc defender and a jin disliker <3 screw that guy
