If Luffy is possibly an amalgamation of Tonatiuh & Huitzilopochtli then I believe Teach is an amalgamation of Cipactli/Tlatecuhtli. Again, just like other Aztec gods these two were often conflated with one another. I’ve seen others theorize he’s a Kraken, Cerberus, Cthulhu, Ammit etc. These are pretty solid theories and they are adjacent to my belief. Again it’s just a theory so take it with a grain of salt.
Let’s start with his pirate flag which is the biggest indicator.
The most common theory is that he possesses 3 souls and theorists use the example of some famous pirate triplets. It’s an interesting theory, but I’m deviating from that. I believe it’s a reference to this:
Aztec Sun Stone
If you lined up BB’s pirate flag with the Sun Stone I believe it would perfectly fit except for the X which represents Nahui Ollin and that is connected to Luffy. The bones would line up with the 8 rays of the Sun and the 3 skulls would line up with the two clawed hands and the face in the middle which has long been theorized to represent Tlatecuhtli, the Earth Monster. This is how Luffy and BB are connected.
I believe Blackbeard has some other connections to Cipactli/Tlatecuhtli.
1. Body Type: Probably one of the biggest indicators. It’s been stated Teach has a weird body type that allows him to absorb 2 Devil Fruits. Frankly, if my theory is correct he might possibly be able to absorb more because Devil Fruits stem from him or he is possibly the offspring of the original Sea Demon?
2. Insatiable Appetite: It was believed that Tlatecuhtli constantly required nourishment and only blood would appease them. This is one of the many reasons human sacrifice was highly prevalent in multiple Mesoamerican cultures. I believe this heavily ties into the reason both Luffy & Teach have such voracious appetites as well as some of the other members of the D. clan though not everyone. Luffy’s love of meat and Teach’s love of cherry pie is a euphemism for blood/hearts. There’s a theory Teach ate WB’s heart in order to acquire his DF. I definitely believe he did in fact do that and he may be able to acquire more through this gruesome ritual.
3. The Number 3: A popular theory is that Teach’s 3 heads represent Cerberus and that he’ll have 3 DF to represent each of the heads. Another one is that he possesses 3 souls. Teach has a strong connection with the number 3. My theory is that because of his connection to Cipactli is the reason for his connection to the number #3. Cipactli was made up of 3 parts: crocodile/fish/toad. I did see a theory floating around that Teach is based on the Egyptian creature Ammit, another being made up of 3 parts. I think that theory is pretty close. However, I would like to point out that the concept of 3 souls/animistic force is one of the cores of the Aztec belief system: tonalli (head), teyolia (heart), ihiyotl (liver). So maybe he does have 3 souls?
4. Inability to Sleep: This ties into Tlatecuhtli’s insatiable appetite. Like I stated earlier Tlatecuhtli possessed an insatiable appetite for blood/hearts. Sometimes she could be heard crying at night for her appetite to be satiated. This could very well be the reason Teach cannot sleep and the reason Oda depicted him as a crying child under the crescent moon.
5. Gender: There’s been debate on Tlatecuhtli’s gender. The creature is known as the Earth Lord, but has feminine attributes. Because of this it’s been theorized Tlatecuhtli possessed dual genders. One Piece has shown it doesn’t shy from dual-gendered characters: Ivankov, Inazuma, Kiku, etc. Now, I’m not trying to say Teach is dual-gendered though we can’t possibly rule it out. However, I believe there’s something to be said when young Shanks wondered if Teach lived twice as much and then later on Ace said the same thing.
So in conclusion I believe Teach is either Cipactli/Tlatecuhtli or possibly their offspring since the Earth creature was a primordial being and Teach is an individual with barely 4 decades under his belt. However, he could possibly be deceptively older? Also, I want to reiterate about a previous post I made. I believe the Sea Devil in the world of OP is in fact Oda’s interpretation of Cipactli. The reason DF users lose the ability to swim is because the same happened to Cipactli after its lower jaw was torn off by Tezcatlipoca. Because all fruits stem from it therefore anyone who ingests parts of its being suffer the same curse.
Tonatiuh & Tlatecuhtli were heavily linked because it was believe Tonatiuh was swallowed by Tlatecuhtli every night only to be regurgitated by it in the morning. Luffy(Tonatiuh) & Teach (Tlatecuhtli) may very well end up both killing each other by Luffy sacrificing himself? I would also like to point out if you remove the letters l, t, u, t, l, i then you’d be left with just the T,a,e,c,h spelling Teach. Maybe another connection or me just reading too much into things? Just thought I’d put this out there.
