some long forgotten red sky art
I enjoyed all of the 80s TMNT toon! But I have to admit that I REALLY enjoyed the last couple of seasons.
The unstable mutation idea was really fun, especially how they mutated in and out of it.
It's kinda funny to me how different Leo's is to the others. Like they ran out of lengths to make the spiky carapaces and shells and just had to go in a totally different direction lmao.
And the final version, where Leo loses all ability to think and alternates between attacking and protecting his brothers is chef's kiss. Just really fun stuff.
It's a very different tone or handling, but I do think anybody who really liked the 2k3 Good Genes arc would dig this mutation story line as well.
But my absolute favorite part of the season is undoubtedly this guy!
Carter! A clever young man who tracks down the turtles because he wishes to be trained by Master Splinter. And he's ALSO got a fantastic mutation story line!
LOVED Carter and his interaction with the bros, Splinter, and April. He fit really well into the story and added a lot, I thought. He's a super interesting character, and not one I've ever heard even having seen a bunch of gifs and art of this toon around. I'm obsessed with him and would absolutely watch him in his own cartoon (of which the TMNT have to guest star, 100%).
What I don't like was his unceremonious ending??? Seriously, WTF. They just...ship him off to the future??? Even though A) they solved the turtle's unstable mutation in the present, B) Carter's mutation seemed less unstable and there was fantastic potential there for a Splinter-like storyline about him coming to terms with and accepting his mutation considering how many lives it helped him save, which also would have brought Splinter's story arc back around in an interesting way, and C) they literally just wrapped up a timeline plot with the turtles where the turtles being in the wrong timeline was killing off their present-time counterparts. ??? WHAT.
Did not make sense and was a very poor ending to what was otherwise a strong and interesting story line. I would have loved for them to utilize Carter the entire time. I would love to see Carter resurrected in any new TMNT iteration as well.
Also, wow, was the ending of the series as a whole very abrupt. >_e I do like that the show wrapped up with the boys graduating, even if there wasn't a ceremony, lol.
All in all, I had a lot of fun on my first watch of the 87 TMNT toon. I absolutely see why people like this version now.
Side/minor characters my literal beloveds
What do you like about the Red Sky 87 TMNT episodes?
The Unstable Mutation arc!
(oh and I like the character, Carter, too)
Not sure if that's an official name for it, but I'm a sucker for the story concept of slowly devolving into a monstrous being out of your control. Like, if y'all liked the "Good Genes" arc from TMNT 2003 or the whole "Savage Raph" thing from Rise of the TMNT, then this arc is like those, but on steroids!
I hope y'all are ready for me to ramble about one of my favorite parts of TMNT 1987, cuz that's what I'm gonna do! Thank you anon, for giving me that excuse reason! Heavy spoilers for TMNT 1987 below the cut!
Before I get into the arc, first let's have a quick overview of the "Red Sky seasons" of TMNT 1987. "Red Sky" is a fan-made name for the final 3 seasons of TMNT 1987.
For whatever reason, during those seasons the background artists started coloring the sky red. Those seasons also got a bit more plotty and dark, and had more over-arching storylines instead of being episodic. So they are referred to as the "Red Sky seasons" due to them being both figuratively AND literally more ominous!
For comparison, the Red Sky seasons are to TMNT 1987 what the Rise of the TMNT movie is to the rest of the series, or what the "Leo being thrown through a window" incident is to most other TMNT series.
And while my main critique of these seasons is that they were kind of still figuring out how to do chronological storytelling, so parts of it are a bit awkward (particularly in season 10), and there is also a severe lack of April O'Neil, it had some really cool concepts.
It introduced a pretty neat character, named Carter, who joins the turtles in fighting the bad guys:
And it had the Unstable Mutation arc (spoilers below)...
Underrated characters but redesigned (The last one is unfinished)
Yknow whos a character I'd like to see be brought back? Carter Dawson, I remember really liking him as a kid, it'd be nice to see him again (also just he and his va are fine af so there's that)
Come back carter
Edit: OMGOD AND VENUS, VENUS TOO, I MISS HER, WITH HER RECENT ADAPTATION SHE'D FIT PERFECT IN THE RISE SERIES. Also would love to see revamps of characters like Irma or Angel in future tmnt stuff. Love April and Casey but switch it up a bit guys
Zach and Carter are very similar characters in very different fonts and I care about both of them so let me ramble
Zach wanted to be a turtle, Carter wanted to be a ninja
While Splinter was quick to accept the new son/student, the turtles were not as patient..
Using bravery, creativity, ingenuity and wit, they win the day and the approval of
though they both have a lot to learn about being a ninja turtle
Verdict????: Zach and Carter would be brothers had they actually met lol.
