Was watching season 5 of tmnt 2k3 the other morning, finished all 13 episodes in one go….
But my fiancé made a comment that got me thinking and we had a whole conversation about this.
We were like, sure season 5 is good. Objectively. It could probably reasonably stand on its own. However. Season five is very different from the first four seasons in two key ways:
1) it only had thirteen episodes
2) it didn’t have to be the “attention getter”
You’re probably wondering what I mean by that second one. But we’re gonna talk about number 1 first :)
I think we can confidently say that for a show like tmnt, 26 episodes is like the golden number, right? The number of episodes you have at your disposal in a regular season allows for perfect timing and execution of both an A and B plot, with proper introduction and use of various side characters.
So, reducing that number to 13 episodes also reduces the amount of time you have to grab a viewer’s attention to a certain plot point and get them to grab key information from the show on your way to the finale episodes where you wrap everything up. To get the timing right on each act of the story—especially when you’re used to having double the amount of time to do it in—is very tricky.
Because of this, the way the plot sets up and the side characters are introduced and used feels very much like an 11 year old fanfic writer inserting their OCs, only to realize they don’t want to make a backstory for them or give them actual personalities, they only wanted to draw them. So when it comes time in the story to give them personality or risk having the story fall flat, they kill the characters off all at once. This gives the viewer some whiplash in the middle of the story, and leaves them wondering why you even introduced the characters in the first place.
(This is not to say that 11 year old fanfic writers are bad, because they are an invaluable part of the fandom, but seriously. We’ve all been there. It’s just what happens most of the time.)
Number two, this season didn’t have to be the attention-getter. They didn’t have to grab the audience and make them watch, because they already had them for four seasons, so they figured that this season could just be an attention-keeper season.
By this point, the show had probably lost some of the appeal, and people were ready for something new. This is part of why tmnt is a franchise known for its rebirth of the characters and the story.
My guess is that they were picked up for another season, but demand was low, so they got a limited amount of time to do it in, and it backfired.
Honestly, season five might have turned out as my favorite season if the story were more fleshed out, the new characters given some backstory, and more suspense added into the whole “mystic original Shredder” plot line. Because dragon turtles? The whole “mystic ninja masters” thing? So cool.
Late day 23.
