A panel of Brazilian Supreme Court justices sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison Thursday after convicting him of attempting a coup to remain in office despite his 2022 electoral defeat. The far-right politician who governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022 was found guilty on five counts by four members of a five-justice panel. The latest to rule were Cármen Lúcia and Cristiano Zanin on Thursday, a day after another justice, Luiz Fux, disagreed and voted to acquit the ex-president of all charges. Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest in Brasilia. His lawyers have said they will appeal the verdict to the full Supreme Court of 11 justices. The ruling and sentence could deepen political divisions and prompt a backlash from the United States government. U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that he was "very unhappy" with the conviction. Speaking to reporters as he departed the White House before the sentence was announced, he said he had always found Bolsonaro to be "outstanding."

Of course Trump is "very unhappy". He thinks the world should be run by personally insecure totalitarian bullies with ties to enormous wealth who like to use violence.

Perhaps Trump will try to trade Brazilian-American George Santos for Bolsonaro. lol

There is another important weapon the totalitarians use in their campaign to frighten the world into submission. This is the weapon of psychological shock. Hitler kept his enemies in a state of constant confusion and diplomatic upheaval. They never knew what this unpredictable madman was going to do next. Hitler was never logical, because he knew that that was what he was expected to be. Logic can be met with logic, while illogic cannot—it confuses those who think straight. The Big Lie and monotonously repeated nonsense have more emotional appeal in a cold war than logic and reason. While the enemy is still searching for a reasonable counter-argument to the first lie, the totalitarians can assault him with another.

Republicans are lying outright and they just don’t care that you know that they are lying.

The vast majority of people who vote in Republican primaries won’t see this vid because they are part of the Trump cult which only watches Fox News – or even worse brainwashing channels.

It is no longer hyperbole to say that Republicans are using totalitarian propaganda techniques. They feel, like Hitler crony Joseph Goebbels, that if you repeat lies often enough then people will start to believe them. If Republicans could, they would edit history to their advantage the way Stalin did.

US Representatives Paul Gosar (R-AZ-04), Jody Hice (R-GA-10), Andrew Clyde (R-GA-09), and probably many of their colleagues are trying to get people to believe that the pro-Trump terrorists who rampaged through the US Capitol actually had the temperaments of Mother Teresa, Albert Schweitzer, Mahatma Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama.
