Holmemes pt. 12
Took me a while to decide which Holmes picture to put this text post with and then realized that there was really only one answer:
New Year's Eve Bunch of Holmes&Watson Studies 🎄
We had canon gay Sherlock Holmes in barely post-Hays Code Hollywood
(he tries to persuade Holmes to sleep with Madame Petrova)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) dir. Billy Wilder
everyone shut up you know what i think is so cool
the fact Nigel Bruce who worked with Basil Rathbone in several Sherlock Holmes films knew Sir Cedric Hardwicke
Sir Cedric Hardwicke's son Ted Hardwicke ended up playing with Jeremy Brett in Granada's Sherlock Holmes production, replacing David Burke
David Burke appeared in a series called The Champions, and so did Brett
Brett was besties with Robert Stephens who played Holmes with Collin Blakely as Watson in Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
the Granada production also had Jude Law appear with Brett and Ted in the Shoscombe Old Place episode
Brett had met Stephen Fry who has met Hugh Laurie, who plays the title role in the Holmes-inspired medical drama House with Robert Sean Leonard as Dr. James Wilson
also Jude Law plays Watson alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Ritchie films
RDJ has acted with Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's Avenger movies
guess who also appears in those movies? Martin Freeman
Cumberbatch and Freeman have played Holmes and Watson respectively in BBC's Sherlock
Ben's family was also friends with Brett and he grew up watching the show
Cumberbatch and Freeman also appear in the Hobbit movies alongside Ian McKellen, who stars as Holmes in a film based on a book of the same name, Mr. Holmes
both McKellen and Cumberbatch have met Jonny Lee Miller who stars with Lucy Liu in CBS' Elementary
Miller and Ben have acted together in a production of Frankenstein, alternating each other's roles
also i forgor but was reminded by yall that Stephen Fry did not just meet Laurie, he acted with him in Jeeves and Wooster and he also played Mycroft in the Ritchie Holmes films
What the ActualHeck
Who do people picture when reading the ACD Holmes stories? Do you picture actors or make up what they look like?
I keep flicking between tplosh Holmes with Granada Watson and BBC Sherlock with RDJ Watson like I can’t help it. Idk why I just can’t decide what they look like.

"Resting After a Case"
this wasnt directly after a case in the movie but i like the visuals
updated tierlist coz it's been too long since the last one. all my own extremely biased opinions mostly based on the following:
did the writer understand the holmes & watson relationship (are they nice to each other; is it clear they both like each other and couldn't exist alone)
is watson shown to have his own skills that are necessary for the plot just as much as holmes's skills are
is the mystery good (can the viewer follow along and solve it if they pay attention; are the clues things that a crime would actually have or are they just newspaper riddles or extreme conveniences that the writer made up bc they couldn't come up with actual clues)
I was listening to the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast (some episodes that I had missed) and was surprised when it was mentioned that Jeremy Brett and Robert Stephens were best friends! And that there were many anecdotes about and with Jeremy in Robert Stephen's biography.
Here are two that were mentioned and isn't Jeremy just lovely?
"Jeremy snuggled up to me and to Tarn. And we became inseparable best friends. He was terribly good-looking and always suffered for it. At school he was known as 'the tart of Eton' because he sang like Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, but was giving out all the wrong signals to unsuitable men who kept trying to pick him up. And I was the gentleman's relish who sat between him and the rather heavy old queers in the company. I winkled him out and we bonded. As platonic friends, never sexual partners."
"In June 1955, Jeremy went off to make the King Vidor film War and Peace in Rome with Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda. I remember a letter of farewell from the book and gave it to him to read on the plane. He told me just how touched he was and very kindly said to Tarn and I that if we could find our fares in the next three week break, he would pay all our expenses. So we went to Rome, a city which I have adored unreservedly from that day to this, and we were billeted in a flat with Robert Graves' daughter, Diana. Jeremy, bless his heart, gave us pocket money from his own salary."
