SP had a perennial fire problem, especially in the Sierra during the summer: not just drought-hit pines on the granite slopes but the timber trestles and snow sheds. So began the specialized fire trains, with dedicated engines and converted water cars, ready to protect the infrastructure of that transcontinental route.

2252 is the most famous, stationed out of Roseville yard and on display today nearby (still with whale back tender, although missing all the firefighting accoutrements)
