Trellech, The Town That Shrank

Monmouthshire (Wales), during the medieval 13th-14th century

Trellech was once a booming medieval industrial town, possibly as big as London in its heyday. It was built by the powerful de Clare family to manufacture weapons and armour during the Anglo-Welsh conflicts.

But after a few short decades of glory, disaster struck:

Disease, war, and fire wore it down

Economic decline hit hard

Eventually, the town shrank back into a village, forgotten for centuries

The ruins of that thriving city are still buried beneath the soil, and people continue to dig.

A modern man named Stuart Wilson bought a field in Trellech on a hunch and began digging, where he discovered the remains of a medieval town. Like, actual buildings! There are still visible ruins, ancient wells, and stonework. It challenges how we think about “lost cities”, and this one was hiding in plain sight, beneath farmland. It’s also proof that history doesn’t just disappear — it waits!

So, how do I feel learning about Trellech?

Honestly? A little humbling and a little haunting, too. Imagine walking through the streets today, only to learn that there is a whole other life layered beneath! People who lived, loved, fought, and faded long before you and I arrived. Makes me feel deeply connected, as if time isn't linear but a stack of forgotten pages under my shoes.

Places like Trellech aren't just stones or rubble. They're echoes of the past. They hold fragments of human stories stripped of the noise of the present. There's something honest about ruins - they don't pretend. They show you what remains when everything else is gone.

Would I visit Trellech or walk the remains of other forgotten towns?

Absolutely! I'd want to stand where the past still whispers, to trace the outlines of lives once lived, and to listen to the laughter that faded with time.

There's a quiet thrill in piecing together what was, even if I know I'll never get the full story. It's the mystery that keeps you coming back.
