Lemon-scented soap bubbles. Dregs of lukewarm coffee. Remnants of that evening’s dinner, scrubbed from plates slick with water. Casual conversation curled around the couple, reassuringly calm amid the deafening quietness of the family’s home.
“So Theo needs glasses?” Unnecessary panic edged into Sabrina’s voice as she wiped the water from her hands.
“Well, not for definite but my mom’s adamant she saw him squinting at the tv earlier,” Ben sighed as he swirled the sad remains of his coffee in his mug.
“I just don’t understand how we haven’t noticed it after all these years, but she spots it after one day.”
“Don’t turn this into something that makes you start doubting your parenting abilities, babe-”
“-God we’re too old to be calling each other that now,” Sabrina chuckled, sliding a clean plate, still dripping suds, into the drying rack.
Ben smiled into his coffee mug, but didn’t respond to her comment, no matter how much it had amused him. “You’re a great mom, this is probably just something that’s sprung up over the last few weeks. We haven’t been looking out for it, so we had no reason to suspect anything.”
“I’ll finish these dishes then I’ll go talk to him. He shouldn’t have to suffer in silence. I just wish he’d take some initiative and tell us these things, at least then we wouldn’t have all this speculation.”
They sighed in unison, then let the sloshing of soapy water and mindless tapping of Ben’s foot take center stage again.
