☆ After the whole shabangalang, the same night, Jack made sure to keep you laying down, insisting on cleaning up the both of you. You also had day shift in likely less than six hours or so, so whatever sleep you could steal was greatly appreciated.
♡ After that night, though, whatever hesitant flirtation and bonding formed between the two of you just... fell. No follow up, no second glances from the night shift attending. Just a lingered gaze you were half-sure you made up.
☆ So of course you didn't bring it up again. It was probably just a one-night-stand. Mating season in its high and a pretty boy close who wouldn't stop flirting every year.
♡ You blamed the churning of your gut that grew more common as the embarrassment and disappointment of realizing you put too much hope into... whatever this was. The odd bouts of light-headedness or nausea simply not eating or drinking enough, as plenty of doctors and nurses did. The heavier relief of sleep when you got home just tired from taking so many shifts. The quicker slides between emotions being the hormones of mating season adjusting back down.
☆ But when you got up one morning and felt your lower stomach a bit more pushed out than usual? It was hard to dismiss that as anything that first came to mind. Strange. You didn't eat anything last night. Maybe some reheated rice, but nothing out of the ordinary. You never hit the gym, but it's never caused issues before.
♡ So like any respectable doctor- you ignored it
☆ Maybe the first few days it was bearable. An undershirt tucked in beneath your scrubs and some Tylenol when it started to cramp, you were fine. It's fine. It'll pass. Getting a week into it and taking both day and night shifts, though, was another story.
♡ You thought you were doing well with it, honestly. But apparently by only a week and a half in- accompanied with growing lower abdomen you could embarrassingly cover up with layers of thick sweaters and needing more steals away to a corner or the staff room to catch your breath and try to ignore the pain- it didn't go by unnoticed.
☆ Abbot had joined you in the closet you had stolen off to, quick to speak up with hands raised in a mock surrender before you tried to skedaddle away
"Crap- sorry, Dr. Abbot, I- I swear I'm-"
"Kiddo, drop it, please. I just need you to listen to me for a sec-"
"No, I get it, I'm sorry about- the whole thing, the other week. It was unprofessional and a one-time thing and I swear 'm not gonna, like, bring it up for blackmail or anything-"
"What? No, no, just- please? Just a moment? I wanna help you."
♡ The air held a moment, charged with everything neither of you wanted to say and everything you wanted to admit.
"Look, I, ah, I know this might sound kinda... impossible, but I'd really like for you to just- entertain me?"
"....anndd what might that be...?"
"...take a pregnancy test."
"Ex-cuse me?"
☆ As it turns out, you were pregnant! You thought you were delirious, seeing the two red lines on the small stick, but then again, you also have feathered wings and a tail.
♡ You panicked. Of course you panicked, what better was there to do? What did this mean for your future? Your career? Would people look at you different? Should you tell Jack? Should you tell anyone? Should you keep the kid? Abort it? Could you even abort this? How would it happen? Would it come out looking like a human? A hybrid? A magpie-badger? Would it come out as an egg? Would there be multiple? Oh, gosh, it's gonna be so painful- are you even ready for a kid? You're still paying off med school debt, how could you handle a kid? And what of Jack? Would he be fine with it? Will he ditch you, maybe leave state? Will he deny it's his? Are you gonna have to switch hospitals to be spared the embarrassment, the shame of getting pregnant by your superior? The wrath of HR? And what about-
☆ Needless to say. That night wasn't the best. Staring at Jack's contact he had given you alongside that awkward urging in the ER closet. Wondering if you should tell him. What his reaction would be. If you should keep the kid at all.
