Some words. This ended up being much angstier than I intended. Some quick warnings: tw: manipulation, guilt tripping, forced out of the closet, and bullying please let me know if I need to tag anything else for you
Ewan slammed the door as he stormed through the apartment. Castor looked up with a frown, just catching sight of his brother's bloody nose before he pulled out an ice pack, pressing it to his face.
"Got in a fight." Ewan snapped, shouldering his way passed Castor.
"Downstairs." Ewan slammed his bedroom door, leaving Castor standing in the hallway alone. He frowned, then turned on his heel, deciding to go find Adair. The young blond hadn't been himself this week, and Castor had a suspicion that there might be a relationship to blame for that. He made it to the base's training room, where he found Adair sitting on the floor, staring at his partially wrapped hands with red eyes.
"Whoa, hey kiddo." He stepped into the room, kneeling on the ground next to Adair, "Are you alright?"
"No." Adair's voice hitched as he wiped his eyes.
"You wanna talk about it?"
Adair shook his head, wiping away yet more tears. Castor nodded and shifted so he was sitting next to Adair. He draped his arm over Adair's shoulders and the teen leaned into him, crying a little more freely. After about ten minutes, he finally spoke.
Castor nodded. "Yeah. Sometimes it really does."
They were quiet for a while longer before he spoke again. "Look, Addie. I know it's hard, and it seems tough right now. But you'll make it through this. It's just a break up, everyone has a few of those."
"It's not just a break up though." Adair sniffed. "It's so much worse."
Adair didn't say anything. He just shook his head. Castor sighed.
"How long were you two together?"
"Six…" Adair stopped, squinting as he thought, then nodded. "Yeah. Six months."
Castor nodded. "That's a long time."
Adair shifted. "We broke up on Monday."
Yeah that lines up. Castor thought. He'd noticed a drop in the younger boy's mood when he'd gotten home from school, and in the three days since, he hadn't gotten any better.
"Why didn't you say anything? Ewan and I wouldn't have teased you too much. Just a little at the beginning maybe."
"Because I wasn't ready to." It was barely a whisper. "That's why we broke up too. Because I wasn't ready. Because I didn't want to-" he sobbed a little and Castor hugged him tighter.
Adair let out a shuddering gasp, pushing away from Castor.
"Do I get to know a name at least?" Castor asked gently.
Adair swallowed hard, picking at the wrap around his left hand.
"Devon." He finally whispered.
"Devon?" Castor's eyebrows ticked upwards as he took in the information. "He was a guy?"
"So...you didn't say anything about dating someone because you weren't ready to come out?" It all seemed to click into place a little bit now as Adair nodded. Castor nodded again, chewing his lip thoughtfully. "You know that doesn't change anything between you and I, right? You're still my little brother and I still love you."
"I know." Adair whispered. "I just-I wasn't ready to...say it out loud, I guess."
"Hey, I get it. It's scary."
The tears started running down Adair's face in thicker rivers than before.
"He-he said that if-if I didn't love him enough to come-come out then maybe we shouldn't be dating." Adair sobbed. "And-and I wasn't ready, but I wasn't ready to say goodbye either, Cas…but I did because I thought maybe he was right. Maybe he deserved to be with someone who was out and wasn't afraid, maybe I wasn't good enough-"
"Stop." Castor said, "You are good enough. You stop that right now. This is a very personal journey, and he has no right to tell you things like that."
Adair didn't say anything. He just played with the tape on his knuckles a little more. A thought struck Castor and he frowned.
"Does this have anything to do with why Ewan came home with a broken nose?"
Adair's lip quivered as he dug out his phone and handed it to Castor. "This is what he put on his Instagram."
Castor looked at the post. It was eight pictures. Seven of Adair, who looked happy. Some were posed, him smiling or making funny faces at the camera. Others were candid, him dozing in the grass outside the school in the shade. One was just two hands clasped together. It was the eighth picture that made Castor angry though. A screenshot of a text conversation that had no business being posted like this.
Adair: I'm sorry, I'm just not ready for that yet.
Devon: if you loved me you'd be ready.
Adair: Dev c'mon, Its more complicated than that. You know that.
Devon: it's really not. Either you love me or you don't.
Devon: so that's it? You're not even going to respond?
Adair: I dont know how! I love you, you know that. But I'm just not ready to come out yet, I'm sorry.
Devon: fine. I'll give you your sweatshirt tomorrow at school.
Adair: Devon, please don't…..
Castor's jaw clenched as he scrolled down and looked at the caption.
"He outed you?" His voice was dangerously low as he stared at the phone.
Adair nodded. "And I'm not-I don't think-its totally not the point, but I think I'm bi, not gay... and I know that isn't the point but he always made a big deal out of it and I just-" his rambling came to a faltering stop as he looked at his brother.
Castor pulled his eyes up from the phone and looked at Adair. His little brother looked like a puppy that had been kicked. He set the phone down on the floor and pulled him into a tight hug.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. He had no right to do any of that to you. And if I had known that he was treating you like that...I'm so sorry, Adair." He shook a little, sighing. "I'm sorry, buddy."
Adair tensed up at first, surprised by the sudden hug. He leaned into it after a minute though, letting out a shaky breath. "Thanks, Cas."
