Dick finishes a rough mission with the Titans where he got thrown hard into a wall, smiles and jokes with everyone, and then zetas back to the Cave where he promptly throws up and collapses because almost every bone in his left arm is broken and not a single person noticed.

Actor!Jack Abbot X Actress!Reader
Jack signed on before the older man had even gotten the chance to finish his spiel, telling him how he would do whatever it took to be there. a/n: hi! this is my second The Pitt fic and honestly i spent the entire day writing it, I hope you enjoy it! feedback is highly appreciated! warnings: mentions of injury, mentions of wounds, mentions of alcohol drinking
This was nothing new for him, acting had been a simple hobby turned into his profession before his frontal cortex had even fully formed. Something most people would scoff at if given the opportunity. Nowadays people would rush over to get his autograph, to tell him what an inspiration he was. It was nice for a while, meeting fans and taking photos when he wasn't rushing to another audition, or to film. Now? It was more of a chore, and that made him feel like a terrible person deep down.
Now, don't get it twisted and think that he wasn't beyond grateful for the things he had, that would be a complete lie. It just got to be overwhelming at times, one of those being the day he was heading home after losing his leg. Paparazzi had been waiting outside for the chance to get any kind of photo. Sitting around like the horrific vultures they were, praying to see even a scrap of the man he was.
Michael had gone to pick him up, speaking with the doctors regarding his future physical therapy appointments, medications he would need for the PTSD that surely would hit sooner rather than later. The sky had been overcast as Michael wheeled him outside, ignoring everyone and everything until the sound of a camera shutter caught their attention. Jack could feel the way his chest tightened, hands clutched onto the sides of his wheelchair. His best friend, however, hadn't wasted a single moment before storming over and swinging a fist at the pap. He'd said it didn't matter if the idiot tried to sue, that Jack deserved better than to have a photo taken during something that was private.
He found out not too long after that it was his wife who had slipped where he had been staying at the hospital. Divorce papers sitting harshly on the table in front of him, another reminder that he would never be the same as before. Everyone rallied around him once the divorce was finalized, many of them thankful the two didn't have any children to drag through the mud.
Kids were the furthest thing from his mind before the accident, considering he'd had the slightest inkling that his wife had been sleeping with her yoga instructor. She wasn't someone famous, they'd been high school sweethearts, falling in love when they were too young and dumb to realize, to know what could happen.
Jack knew better than to utter anything to her, to tell her that he did know the truth behind her actions, how she pulled away so easily. The ring sat on his finger long after the ink had dried, his thoughts swirling with a million different thoughts and questions.
She'd seen him at his lowest, and instead of being there for him, like all of his friends had done, she ran to the first man that showed her any kindness. It turned him bitter, made him feel sick to his stomach. Dana had come over every few days just to sit and listen, to offer her own sympathies. Michael had driven him to all of his appointment's, making a promise he would never break. He'd lost so many roles in that time, managers and the like passing over him like he was trash.
And then, Michael had come to him with an idea, he wanted to make a show dedicated to healthcare workers, to their actual struggles. To show people the side they didn't get to see.
Jack signed on before the older man had even gotten the chance to finish his spiel, telling him how he would do whatever it took to be there.
They'd hired so much new talent that Jack wasn't sure he'd even be able to remember everyone's names. Trinity had made her presence known long before she stepped foot on set. Samira was no different, a firecracker all on her on that took no shit from anyone. Dennis was quiet, kept more to himself but didn't fail to make conversation with everyone else. Heather was a friendly face he'd seen before, happy to have her around. Dana had been a longtime friend, had been at his wedding along with her husband, he'd never get tired of being around her.
Then there was you, someone he'd seen on TV a few times over the years, never really settling down to watch any of your movies, or shows. It's not that he didn't want to, it's more that he didn't have any time. Once the cameras were rolling Jack put aside all his differences that came with acting and put his acting first.
It was a nice change, to simply be instead of worrying if he'd said the wrong thing, had made anyone feel uncomfortable. Had he improvised a few lines? Sure, but everyone in the business had done it before, Jack was no different.
The wrap party was loud, everyone laughing together as if they'd been friends for years instead of having just met only six months prior.
It was nice.
Michael had introduced you and Jack, mentioning briefly that they'd been friends for years before working on the show together. Faithfully leaving out that he'd truly been Jack's crutch during some of the darkest times of his life, however.
You took it all in stride, a bright smile on your face as you talked with him, how you'd been a fan since he had started his career. His cheeks burned as you told him how you'd found one of his more popular roles by complete accident. Your smirk downright mischievous as you talked about how good he looked.
Yeah, Jack tended to be naked more often than not in his younger days, he had a body that most men could only dream of, why not flaunt it? Except now he was talking to a gorgeous woman who had seen his bare ass more than anyone should.
Everything with you felt natural, as if you'd been friends for the last twenty years, your laughter mingling together as Jack giggled. Jack Abbot did not giggle!
And that's what led him to today, standing beside you, Michael, and Dana as they announced the emmy nominations for the upcoming shows. His heart raced as each name was read, Michael's being first as shock filled his mind before he laughed, cheering his friend on. As they kept reading, each name being followed by a loud applause until it got to the second to last category. Jack knew he wouldn't be nominated, he wasn't on the show enough to be categorized.
"And for best supporting actor we have, Jack Abbot for The Pitt."
Had his heart stopped? Surely there was no way they'd just said his name of all people. It took everyone screaming happily that it sunk in. He was nominated alongside Michael, Dana, and you.
"Holy shit," Jack chuckled to himself, shaking his head as if it would wake him up from his dream.
"We did it!" Your arms were wrapped around his neck before his brain could compute, hands settling on your waist to hold you close.
Dana smirked at the display, heading over to the rest of the cast, each of them congratulating her on being nominated. She deserved it, her acting had been so convincing that even Jack sometimes thought she was a nurse and not an actress. He'd say the same for you in a heartbeat, the way you carried yourself so carefully when you were in character.
You were playing a second year resident, not a newbie who didn't know there way around, but still new enough to be wary around the attendings. Heather had practically taken you under her wing as a guide, helping ease the transition. She'd played a doctor before, even if the show was nowhere as intense as The Pitt. You'd taken to it like a fish to water, almost more natural than everyone else. It was nice to see someone who was unafraid to be themselves.
"Hey, we were all thinking of heading out to dinner after we finished wrapping for the day, did you want to come with?" You looked so hopeful, so eager for him to agree and say yes.
His lips parted as he struggled to come up with any kind of answer, to tell you that while he'd love to go out, he needed to rest and get out of his damn prosthetic. Of course that's what he wanted to say, but Jack had never been so lucky.
"Of course he's coming with, need someone to keep everyone in line," Michael smirked as he wrapped an arm around Jack's shoulders, pulling him in tight.
"You're just saying that because the last time we all got drunk you ended up passed out on my living room floor," that was a story for a different time, though, not while they were filming season two of their show.
Your eyes nearly bugged out of your head at Jack's admission, what you wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall at that time.
"Perhaps, but we should celebrate!" He wasn't going to take no for an answer, not with how happy everyone else seemed at the idea.
Jack agreed almost begrudgingly, rolling his eyes before chuckling and heading off to get ready for his next scene. It wouldn't be a bad idea, just a couple of drinks with his coworkers and his friends. What could go wrong?
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
Now, let it stand for the record that Jack does not drink to the point that he blacks out. He might have during his younger, more formative years, but being closer to fifty meant he couldn't handle that anymore. So, when Trinity brought over shots for everyone who was he to say no?
Until one shot turned into two, which turned into five, and soon enough Jack was finding himself waking up on the floor of his bathroom. Luckily it looked like he'd managed to not break his prosthetic, something he'd managed to do while sober before. His head was throbbing, skin clammy from sleeping on the cold tile while a wave of nausea rolled through him like a tidal wave.
"I'm never drinking with those idiots again," Jack grumbled under his breath angrily, pushing up and grabbing onto the ceramic of the counter to pull himself up.
Hopping towards the door that led to his bedroom his throat suddenly tightened, there was someone sleeping in his bed. It definitely wasn't Michael, though they'd definitely passed out together before after a long night of drinking. No, this time it was someone smaller, but who could it have been?
As he hopped further into the room, mainly in search of his leg so he could slip it on and get around easier, his eyes locked onto the sleeping figure. The prosthetic was on their side of the bed, sitting on the floor with the silicone sock sitting overtop. Carefully plopping down he slid the silicone overtop of the fabric sleeve that hadn't seemingly come off in the night. Brow still furrowed he slipped on the leg, pushing himself up slowly to make sure he wouldn't fall over in his state.
It only took a brief moment before his mind had righted itself, his eyes landing on the sleeping figure once more. Reaching down to grab the black comforter(he liked having dark bedding, sue him)before gently, and slowly pulling it away.
Shit, what the hell were you doing in his bed? It looked like you were still completely clothed, which meant neither of you had hooked up, but you were in his bed! Shit, should he call Dana and see what the hell had happened? Or maybe he should call up Michael and try to get some answers.
Reaching over for his phone he heard the sound of someone snoring rather loudly coming from the living room.
"You've gotta be kidding me," Jack groaned to himself, making his way out into the living room where Michael, Trinity, Dennis, and Samira were all sleeping.
Of course this was his life, they'd all managed to drink themselves stupid and passed out in his home. At least none of them were dumb enough to drive home while insanely drunk. Last thing Jack needed was to hear that one of his co-stars had died because of the same reason he'd lost his leg. No, Jack hadn't been the one driving drunk, he'd just been casually t-boned by someone going forty over the speed limit while intoxicated.
"Hey, wake up," Jack slapped at Michael's face, rolling his eyes as the other man groaned before falling back asleep.
He slapped him a few more times before he bolted upright, grimacing as pain shot through his skull.
"Fuck, time s'it?" He looked over to Jack with bloodshot eyes, shirt wrinkled from how he'd slept on the couch all night.
"Seven forty-three," Jack turned his back, heading over to the kitchen to get himself a glass of water and hopefully some tylenol to take away his own headache.
Michael sat up first, biting back his own wave of nausea before getting up and waking everyone else that still seemed to be asleep. Their groans echoed until the sounds of footsteps coming from his bedroom caught his attention.
To say you looked worse for wear would be an understatement, you looked like you'd gotten hit by a mack truck, if a mack truck was made from expensive vodka and whiskey.
It was adorable.
"If you can all handle food, I'm planning on ordering breakfast," Jack could feel heat creeping up the back of his neck as you stepped over, draping yourself over his counter like a cat.
"Mmm, a bacon, egg, and cheese sounds amazing right now," your words were muffled against the counter as you soaked in the coolness of the marble.
Jack put your sandwich in first, followed by his own, then Michael's, everyone else following suit as they tried to come back down to reality. It was funny, to see people that were nearly half his age be reduced to puddles as their hangovers took over. He wanted to wrap you up in his comforter once more, promise that he'd help you feel better soon.
Michael watched him like a hawk, could feel the older man's eyes on him at all moment's of the early morning. He could see the way Jack felt towards you, the need to protect you from everything cruel in this world, in the business you worked for. It was a dog eat dog world, and you deserved nothing but the best.
Everyone left slowly, Trinity and Dennis leaving together since they were currently sharing an apartment, Samira left just minutes later. She thanked Jack for letting her sleep on his surprisingly comfortable recliner. He didn't have the heart to tell her he'd bought it for lumbar support. You had left with Samira, eyes lingering on him for longer than would be appropriate, a small smile on your lips.
"Don't even start, I'm still hungover and the last thing I need is you telling me I should get back into the dating world," Jack held up his hand, cutting off the speech that he knew his best friend had in store.
"C'mon, she clearly likes you too, why stop it?" Michael knew why Jack was afraid to pursue anything, to put himself back out there.
The divorce had been nasty, his ex wife threatening to take everything from him, forgetting the prenup they'd signed before getting married. Jack wasn't a selfish man, never had been, but he was cautious. It's the only reason he still had a home to sleep in at the end of the day.
"You saw how well things went with Angela, do you really think I should start dating?" Jack wasn't trying to be malicious, but goddammit it bothered him.
Michael had been in the same boat as him, having sworn off dating after his last relationship pretty much blew up in his face. Being someone famous left too much wiggle room for things to go wrong, this was no different.
"You'll never know unless you try, we both know that," of course he'd use his own words against him. It was such a Robinavitch thing to do.
"I don't want to ruin the friendship we have, she's still young," Jack sighed to himself, glancing down at the half empty cup of coffee.
Michael raised a brow, leaning closer with his hands clasped together.
"She's thirty-three, I'm pretty sure she can make her own decisions on what's best for her."
Damnit
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
You were almost afraid to step on set, after waking up in your co-star's bed with no recollection as to what exactly happened the night before? Yeah, that wasn't exactly something you were proud to admit. The night had started out relatively tame, until Trinity practically begged you to take shots with her. You'd never been able to tell her no, not with how convincing she was. Lo and behold it led you into Jack's bed, the scent of his cologne and laundry detergent sinking into your bones.
"It's gonna be fine, he clearly wasn't angry that you were there, just pretend that you guys were shooting a scene together that involved you getting super drunk," she shrugged as she watched you try not to have a breakdown.
Why were you friends with her again?
"You don't get it, I'm pretty sure we cuddled at some point before he went into the bathroom to puke," you couldn't quite be sure if he'd had his hands on you or not, everything was fuzzy.
"Cuddling is child's play, god forbid the man cuddled you," she rolled her eyes, stepping through the doors before stopping in her tracks.
You had to stop yourself from running into her back, lips parted as you went to curse her out for stopping so suddenly until you saw why.
"Holy shit, is that his ex wife?" Your eyes were nearly popping out of your head as you watched the interaction.
Jack's face was red, hands thrown up into the air as he yelled angrily at the woman standing in front of him, he arms crossed over her chest. She looked almost bored as he tore into her, the veins in his neck bulging with each word.
"You don't get to come back and pretend everything's fine! I spent weeks in that bed waiting to go home while you were fucking Jackson in our bed!" Jack didn't care who heard his ranting, he wanted them to know what she'd done while he recovered.
"It was a long time ago, why are you acting like we just got divorced?" Her lips pulled into an annoyed grimace, as if she was mad that Jack, her ex-husband, didn't want to forgive her.
"I don't need this, you need to get the hell out so I can do my job," Jack stormed off without waiting for her to respond, storming past Michael angrily.
Michael didn't waste a moment before having her removed from the property, angry that they'd even let her onto the set. You looked over at Trinity as things were forced to go back to normal, your throat tight.
"Holy shit," your words were soft, barely above a gentle whisper.
The rest of the cast and crew did their best to avoid any talk of Jack, or his ex-wife who had showed up so suddenly. It had been decided before the second season was shooting that Jack would direct at least one episode, unfortunately that happened to be today.
He wasn't grueling, or cruel if someone messed up their lines, an extra acting as a patient who was supposed to be dying suddenly opening their eyes. No, the only thing that seemed to hang over everyone's heads was the fact that Jack looked so fucking depressed.
The press were not kind to Jack during his divorce, claiming he was having the affair instead of his wife at the time. The once chronically online actor had stopped posting on all of his socials until the buzz died down, moving onto their next victim. Angela, his ex-wife, didn't like that the attention was no longer on her or her failed marriage. So, she did what she'd done best, she told the paparazzi where he had physical therapy every three days.
Photos circulated for months afterwards, people wondering what had happened since the police reports had been sealed with red tape. It took someone finding out by accident that he'd been in a severe car wreck when driving home one day. The driver had been sent to prison, even if Jack didn't plan on pressing charges, the state did for him.
"Alright, I think we're done with this scene, I finally got the shot we needed," Jack clapped his hands together, stepping away from the screens to try and rub the tiredness from his eyes.
The crew began to clean up the room, preparing it for the next scene.
"I think that might be the best scene out of this season," you stepped up behind him, hands shoved into the pockets of your scrubs.
"Yeah? Think they'll give him shit for being mean to her again this season?" Jack's smirk was barely there, eyes dim as he turned to face you.
"People don't like characters that are mean, they think everyone needs to be some puritan or else they're secretly evil," you scoffed, it had been a top of conversation for the last few years.
"You're not wrong about that," Jack hated the way people viewed characters nowadays.
No one could be complex, they all had to strictly be good and never make bad decisions. If that were to become the case no one would make tv shows, or movies for that matter. Stories need diversity or else they're just boring, tasteless pieces of media.
"I remember how people reacted to you playing Pope," it was the first character he'd played you felt truly drawn to.
Jack's face and neck flushed with color, nervously clearing his throat as he focused on you.
"Really? I drowned out most of the noise during that time," that, however, was a bold faced lie.
Jack knew people thought Pope was scary, a person to be feared rather than studied. It's what drew him to the character to begin with, the idea that someone could be manipulated so easily by someone that should show them love and care? It was a stray from the normal straight and narrow. When the show first aired Jack was afraid people would hate his character immediately. Most people did, claiming that Pope was 'insane', or a 'sociopath' which was never the case.
He had his struggles, and being raised to become an empty vessel? It could happen to anyone, no matter who you were.
"People don't like complex characters, especially when the character in question has a mental illness. They want to pretend that everyone's normal, that they don't struggle with something internally because then it makes that person human."
Jesus, maybe there were things about you he'd never known before, things he was curious to find out.
"You're right, and you should say it," Jack shrugged, his full attention on you.
"Oh, no, I mean it's just that so many complex characters get reduced to nothing to make them more palatable for the regular person that it takes away from what makes them, well, them."
You were right, Jack had watched more television and film than the average person given his career, and knew that most people couldn't handle anything complex. Characters with complex backstories were reduced to becoming nothing more than a parent, or even a spouse to make them palatable. Or, the character would be killed off because they had become more popular than the main cast. It was sickening.
"You understand it, though," Jack could see the way you treated the characters you played, whether it was something as small as a supporting role of a best friend. Or if you were playing the main character in a drama.
You understood what it meant to bring a character to life, no matter what a general audience would think.
"Of course I do, I've had people reduce my characters down to them simply being women, when they were supposed to be the smartest person on the show," you scoffed, more angry at people from the past than anything.
"They expect you to only play the loving mother, or the woman desperate to get married and live her fairy tale dream, right?" Jack had seen it all, watching some of the best actresses be reduced to the function they could serve for society.
"Yes! Oh my god, I actually feel seen for once," you laughed, running a hand through your hair.
He smiled softly, arms wrapped around his chest as he watched you have a small moment. It was nice to find someone who didn't care about being so human, that wasn't afraid to speak their mind either. Someone that gave him butterflies for the first time in over ten years.
Oh.
Oh no.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
Once it was time to start promoting for the Emmy's, none of the group were ready to even know where to begin. Michael, and Dana had both been nominated a handful of times for shows they'd done in the past. Whereas you and Jack were being nominated for the first time ever.
"I object and think Jack should've been nominated for his role as Pope, but that's my personal opinion."
You were never afraid to show your disdain for most awards shows and how they seemed to favor people that didn't deserve it. Mainly abusive actors that got off scot free while everyone else suffered around them.
"You would like Pope, I feel like you tend to go for the complex weird characters," Michael snickered into his glass as Dana set her gaze onto you.
"Maybe I do, someone in this world needs to appreciate complexity," you shrugged, finishing off your drink.
"To be fair, I have to agree, Pope was one of your best roles, Jack," Michael wasn't afraid to show praise where it was due, and tonight was no different.
Everyone was dressed to the nines, having been given their own personal stylist for the panel they were attending. Jack didn't want to complain, to make it seem as if he was ungrateful for everything that had been going on.
However, it had come to his attention that his ex-wife's name was being brought up on social media once more. He'd been avoiding posting on twitter and instagram as much as he could, lest her annoying fans flood his comments and replies.
"We're not here to talk about Pope, not anymore at least," Jack cleared his throat nervously, grabbing his glass of water to take a sip.
"Nope, we're here to congratulate our dear friend Jack on being nominated for an Emmy," Dana held up her glass, a bright smile on her face.
"C'mon, we're here to congratulate everyone here, we're all nominated," Jack didn't want all of the attention on him, which was quite ironic.
The table erupted into laughter as Jack's face flushed with color, his ears picking up on your soft giggles. How'd he never notice you before? He knew people shipped him with Samira's character, it was all over his timeline once the finale dropped. He was close with her, but they were better off as friends. Not to mention he was almost positive that she was dating Trinity, he just couldn't prove it.
"You deserve it, Jack, take the W and move on," you clinked your glasses with everyone's before taking a small sip of your drink.
"So do you," Jack took a sip of his water, eyes never straying from where they stared back at you.
Your heart raced as you tried to stay calm, to not let Jack affect you in any way possible. Of course that was much easier said than done at the moment. Would you admit to anyone that you'd had these deep set feelings for your co-star for nearly two years? Absolutely not, you'd rather eat glass and walk on legos than do that. Trinity noticed before you could try and deny the claim, had asked how you felt about Jack on the last day of filming. Your body had tensed up almost immediately, giving away your feelings and emotions before you could utter a single word.
Javadi was the next person to find out, having gotten word from Trinity, she didn't tease you as much though, offering to give space and leave you be. Samira found out third, spilling the beans to Dennis and Mateo before you found out that they knew too. By the time word had gotten back to you, everyone but Jack knew you had feelings for him. You were somewhat grateful that he had no idea, that your secret was safe for now.
Dana didn't give you any hell, had just told you to keep to yourself if you didn't want Jack to find out right away. And you had, you'd ignored your feelings for a while, had dated a couple of people here and there. Your ex girlfriend hadn't been happy to find out that you were on The Pitt, had accused you of cheating before storming off. It was a blessing in disguise for you, you now had the freedom to simply enjoy instead of worrying about a partner.
Now you were nominated for an Emmy alongside three of your co-stars. It was unbelievable! A dream come true, even if at the end of the day you didn't win, you were still nominated.
"You look very beautiful, by the way," Jack nearly choked on his words as he tried to get them out, gently patting on his chest to stop any water from going into his lungs.
"Thank you, Jack, means a lot coming from you," sure, maybe you were laying it on thick, but it was simply true.
Michael's lips curled in, trying and failing to hide the smirk that was beginning to overtake his face. Dana wasn't far behind, a smirk on her own face as she laughed under her breath. They knew neither of you were aware of the other's feelings, having hoped this party(?) would finally be the kick in the ass you both needed.
As the night drew later, everyone enjoying drinks and dinner provided, it became clearer that the two of you were still just as oblivious. They knew better than to push though, that would only cause a tension that wasn't the fun kind. Jack had offered to walk you out to your car, the two of you deciding not to drink.
"It was nice seeing you again," you turned to face him, clutch held loosely in your left hand as you leaned back against your car.
"Could say the same for you, been a while since we had a good conversation," you hadn't been able to stop replaying your last conversation in your head.
It was more than obvious that Jack liked talking about his past characters, moreso the ones he put heart and soul into. He wasn't cocky like most of the newer actors, the ones that only started acting for the fame and money. Jack did things because he wanted to do, not because someone told him to.
"Oh, I wouldn't say that, every conversation I have with you is great," just stop talking, stop opening your mouth for a second you absolute buffoon!
You did your best to hide your giddy smile, to try and deflect that you weren't some school girl with a crush on her hot older teacher.
"Well, I know we're heading back to finish filming next week, maybe we can find some time to hang out?" Lovesick puppy, that was going to be your new nickname.
"I'll bring in some index cards with good talking points," Jack chuckled to himself, shaking his head to rid his mind of the absolutely insane idea.
"I'll hold you to it, have a great night," without thinking you leaned up, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek before turning to get into your car.
Jack was stunned, body stiff as his mind screamed at him to stop you from leaving, to finally do what he'd wanted to do for the last year and a half. Unfortunately by the time his brain came back online you were long gone. The remnants of your lipstick leaving behind a brand as he reached up to touch his cheek. He truly was screwed when it came to you. Mind, body, and soul.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
Everything that could go wrong, absolutely did go wrong. Jack was sure that he was supposed to be in the building nearly twenty minutes ago, but he was still stuck in traffic. Why had his publicist insist on leaving so late? Even if his category wouldn't be called out until later in the show he still needed to be there. Michael and Dana had each texted him no less than four times, asking where the hell he was. His palms were sweating profusely as they finally pulled up outside the building, ushering him inside and over to the table where everyone sat.
"I'm so sorry, Janet insisted that we left at five, as if we weren't walking the damn carpet at six," Jack scoffed, brushing off his coat as he sat between Michael and Dana.
"I don't know why you keep her around, she's constantly making you late for important events," Dana was almost positive that Janet knew his ex wife and was sent to sabotage his public image.
"I was waiting until after tonight to let her go, and that's exactly what I plan to do," Jack took a deep breath, relaxing into his chair as the host tried, and failed, to make a joke about women in the workforce.
The room was filled with almost nervous laughter, once smiling faces turning into grimaces as his words echoed around. He could see the way you recoiled, as if the hosts words had burned you. And in a way they had, most actresses would always be looked over in part of their male counterparts. A constant reminder that they were replaceable in every aspect.
"Don't listen to his shitty jokes, sweetheart, you're worth more than that asshole ever will be," Jack knew his tone was too loud, most of the tables around them glancing back to where he sat.
"Thank you," your smile was soft, almost sad as your eyes locked with his.
His breath caught in his throat as he noticed you were wearing the same color as his pocket square, a last minute decision on his own part. Janet had insisted he go with the typical white, instead he decided to go with a deep emerald green. There was something entrancing about the color he couldn't put his finger on. It hit him then, the first time the two of you had met you had on a dark green dress.
"Did you..?" Jack was stunned, jaw falling slack as he drank you in like a glass of cold ice water.
"I wanted to commemorate from the first time we met," your eyes crinkled slightly as you smiled, giggling at the silliness of it all.
It meant the world to Jack, to know that someone cared so deeply about something so many people would overlook. A simple dress that Jack had complimented nearly four times in the span of one night had convinced you to wear the same exact color nearly two years alter.
Dana and Michael both looked at one another, speaking without words as they realized the two of you were finally beginning to see what everyone else saw. Still, they wouldn't push until one of you made the first move. Just a little while longer, you'd both come around soon enough.

"And, for best supporting actor the winner is…Jack Abbot for The Pitt!" The room erupted into cheer, everyone clapping in congratulations.
Your table was the loudest, which was no shock to anyone else considering the four of you were all nominated for the same show. Jack stood up with a laugh, laying his hand onto the table to stay upright before stepping around to press a kiss to Dana's cheek. After kissing her cheek he planted a fat kiss onto Michael's mouth, laughing as the room erupted into louder applause before turning to face you.
You stared back at him with an expression he couldn't quite place, his breath catching in his throat as he leaned down to press a kiss to your own lips.
Fuck, he'd definitely died and gone to heaven, there was no other explanation other than pure bliss. Your hands cupped his cheeks as you kissed him back, smiling against his own lips as before he pulled away. Your red lipstick stood out against his skin, reaching up to gently wipe away the small amount that had transferred.
"Go, before they get mad at us," you giggled as you sent him away, turning to ask Dana if your lipstick had smudged at all.
Jack couldn't remember walking onto the stage, couldn't remember taking the award and turning to face the microphone. His ears were ringing beyond belief, heart racing in his chest as he looked down at the Emmy in his hands.
"I, holy shit, I just really want to say a huge thank you to Michael for even calling me about this show. If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have gotten such an amazing opportunity to be on such an incredible show. I of course want to send my love and thanks to the rest of the cast and crew that worked on the show with us, we couldn't do it without you," Jack felt his throat get tight as he tried to hold back tears.
"And, I want to thank someone else who's made my life so much better in such a short time. I love you, sweetheart," Jack held the award out, eyes locked onto where you sat.
You hadn't so much as stopped smiling during Jack's speech, heart swelling with adoration as his words finally sunk in. Jack loved you! He was in love with you! Dana and Michael laughed together, her smirking as he handed over what looked to be nearly three hundred dollars. Of course they were making bets, everyone did that when people were too in their own heads to admit their feelings.
Jack quickly made his way off stage, heading off to get his name engraved into the base of the award, a proud smile on his face. As they were about halfway through his name, it dawned on him that he'd admitted his feelings for you on live TV.
Shit.

You were nowhere near the table by the time Jack got back, making his way over to Michael and Dana with a proud smile, both of their awards sitting safely inside their cases. He knew you weren't upset by not winning, it was between you and Dana at the end of the day. Unfortunately he was sad to see that you weren't there at all.
"Hey, where did she go?" He gestured towards your seat, sitting down beside Dana and Michael once more.
"Went to the bathroom, thought she was going to have more time than she did apparently," Dana wasn't lying, she knew how hard it was to go to the bathroom in a floor length gown.
"Oh, well that's good," Jack knew he was delaying the inevitable, doing his best to hide the fact that he just professed his love for you in front of millions.
Hopefully you wouldn't hate him for that stunt, that was the last thing he needed since everyone was still filming season two of the show. Sure, he knew Javadi and Samira would definitely give him hell come Tuesday when he headed back onto set. That was the joy of it all though, getting to know that he'd made an ass of himself and everyone got to reap the benefits.
"Samira texted me already, asked if the two of you snuck off to hook up in the bathroom," Dana laughed as she handed over the phone to Michael, letting him read the text in question.
Sure enough it was there, the truth that she did indeed ask if her two co-stars were already hooking up post love confession.
"Well, you can tell her she is sorely mistaken and that I in fact did not follow her into the bathroom," no, there wouldn't be a feasible way for Jack to do that to begin with.
Would it be fun? Sure, who didn't like some excitement in their life? Jack knew it would be at the risk of them not only being exposed for being little freaks, but he wasn't going to ruin your reputation.
"Sorry! That line was absolutely huge," you plopped down with a soft sigh, reaching for your drink, it looked different than the last one you had.
"Don't worry hun, we have our newest winner back, though," Dana's smirk slowly turned towards where you sat, mischievous as ever.
Your eyes immediately locked onto him, brow raised in question as Jack slipped the case holding his award between his feet.
"Mhm, name engraved and everything," could the floor open up and swallow him whole before he said something else absolutely stupid and ridiculous?
"Congratulations on your first win, here's to many more in the future," you raised your glass with a smile, watching as the other three did the same.
Jack took a quick sip of his drink, doing his best to drown out that sound in the back of his head, the one telling him to kiss you again.
Sure, it wouldn't be that bad of an idea in hindsight, but considering everything he'd done tonight? It was already bad enough that he was sure everyone was blowing up twitter with his name.
"C'mon, tonight is about enjoying ourselves, not talk about work, or what our friends are up to," Jack sent a glare to both Dana and Michael, almost daring them to say something.
"Alright, you win," Michael downed the rest of his drink, ignoring the way Jack was still slightly glaring at him.
For the rest of the awards show you simply enjoyed conversation, clapping for the rest of the winners until they announced it was a wrap. Michael helped Dana from her seat while Jack helped you from yours, calloused fingers gently cupping your own.
The walk outside was slowly, Dana talking animatedly while Michael listened intently, words barely catching the two of you as you followed behind. You had looped your arm through one of Jack's, pressing close to his side. The night had cooled down significantly, soaking into your skin that was exposed.
"Are you cold?" Jack stopped, unlooping his arm from yours, slipping each arm out of his coat before draping it over your shoulders.
The effect was immediate, warmth soaking into your soul as you gently gripped the fabric of his suit jacket. Your heart raced as the soft scent of his cologne wrapped around you like the most comforting blanket. Like a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter day, a bear hug when you were on the verge of breaking down. Everything was slowly clicking into place.
"Thank you, I'm much warmer now," you turned to face him, hand resting against his bicep, the lavender colored shirt he had on underneath soft beneath your fingers.
Jack smiled slowly, hand reaching up to gently caress your face. Even with old scars, and callouses that would never go away, Jack knew you were the most beautiful woman he'd ever met.
"I meant what I said on that stage, every single word of it," his chest felt tight, the fear that you'd reject him when he poured his heart out to you.
"Yeah? Every word?" You were almost teasing him, waiting to see what his next move would be.
"I've never loved anyone the way I love you," Jack wasted no time, your bodies pressed flush together as his lips pressed against yours.
Ethereal.
That was the only proper word you could use to describe the way Jack kissed you when no one was watching, his fingers gently tangled in your hair, the other wrapped around your waist. You tangled your fingers into his curls, pulling him impossibly closer as you stole the breath from his lungs.
Jack was the first one to pull away, breathless as his eyes fluttered open slowly. It would be obvious to anyone that you were both equally debauched. Your lipstick was smudged, traces of red spread onto your skin, his lips equally as red.
"I love you too, Jack," you pulled his lips back down to your own, continuing the earth shattering kiss.

Jack laughed as he held you close, watched the way you danced around with Samira and Dana. The white dress you wore for him shimmering in the dim lights, your hands thrown up as you danced so care free. The girls around you singing loudly to the song playing from the speakers, their words being cut through with laughter.
"Can I say congrats again?" Robby stepped over to him, placing a hand on his shoulder gently.
"I never thought I'd have this again, but it's different with her," Jack knew he wanted to be with you from the day you'd both met, and here you were just over two years later.
The two men watched as you danced with your closest friends and family, the happiest smile adorning your beautiful face. You'd been insistent on choosing the song you had your first dance to, choosing Turning Page by Sleeping At Last. Jack had poked gentle fun, saying it was the same wedding song from Twilight.
And yet, he couldn't picture a more perfect song for you to dance to, your cheek resting against his chest as he held you close. Your closest friends and family watching on, their soft words of love and happiness flowing around you.
"Everyone can see how happy she makes you, and you with her," Robby chuckled to himself, glancing around the room before catching sight of his wife.
"Go ahead, enjoy yourselves," Jack gently shoved him away, ushering him towards his own wife before his eyes landed back on you.
You were already looking at him as your eyes met, the rest of the room sinking into nothing as you smiled at him, your hands held out towards him. Jack didn't waste anymore time, quickly making his way over to you.
"Hello there, Mrs. Abbot," Jack's hands slid to your back, a bright and happy smile on his face.
"Hello, Mr. Abbot," your giggle was contagious, his eyes creasing as his smile widened.
Jack couldn't take his eyes off you, you were an angel put on this earth to keep him around for the rest of time. He was going to spend the rest of his life making sure you were happy.
After all, he'd waited a lifetime for you.
