Fun fact, flies are pollinators

They are actually the second most important pollinators after bees

Look at this little guy I found while looking for a spot to hang up my carpenter bee house

Looks like he was checking me out just as much as I was looking at him

And judging from the blue metallic body and red eyes, I'm gonna assume this is a blue bottle fly

i heard about SCP-261 bc its getting a video game adaptation; seemed cool so i went to read its article and while i was doing so i came across a reference to SCP-417. curious as to why the instance was immediately incinerated when it was dispensed, i read the article.

needless to say, i was was inspired by the first description of SCP-417-1 and decided to draw it!

i didn't visually base the widow on any specific species (bc finding photos of ANY black widow at a good angle to reference is hard enough already) but for fun i specifically referenced Gryllus bimaculatus for the cricket legs. i picked this species since it's also colored black and thus matches the widow, but more importantly because its a species of cricket that inhabits the same range of the Baobab tree (which SCP-417 appears to resemble).

the length measurement is a median of the average female Western Black Widow and the average G. bimaculatus (both of which were STUPID HARD to figure out, search engines are SO SHIT nowadays).

since i wanted to include the height of the creature as well i had to figure out the height based on the length in a way that both me AND Photoshop could understand so i wouldn't get the math wrong and ANYWAYS scaling calculations are so much harder than you think omfg im never doing that again 💀

anywayyy this was kind of an excuse for me to practice drawing bugs since i don't think i've ever really drawn them before? so that was fun!

i love bugs a lot and it was an interesting challenge to try and mix the anatomy of these two different arthropods in a way that was both visually interesting and adherent to the original description.

for example, i made the fangs of SCP-417-1 a lot larger to compensate for the loss of its pedipalps (front two appendages near a spiders mouth that are technically arms) and to make its bite even more impactful. i also oriented the two pairs of cricket legs to be where a spider's second and fourth legs would usually connect to the body.

i also slightly varied the orientation of the legs in order to make the claws/feet of SCP-417-1 line up on a flat plane so it looks like its actually standing! or as close as i can get, haha

i was originally going to draw the second described instance of SCP-417-1 bc it also inspired me, but after all the trouble i went through for this one, i'll leave that for another day lol

I was skateboarding with my cousin and we came across them by a creek

I initially thought they were webworms, but they tend to come out in the fall, while tent caterpillars come out in the spring
