Aro tries to fire Demetri because he sucks at his job big time. An excerpt from chapter 12 (unpublished, wip) of Hasta la Vista, Baby.
“You’re fired.” Aro made his announcement abruptly, dropping any hint of pretense he usually kept up. “I regret it,” he said coldly.
“You can’t fire me, master,” Demetri sneered, unable to resist saying the cliché. “I quit."
“You did?” Aro raised an eyebrow. “When?”
“Oh, about thirty minutes ago, actually,” Demetri boasted, playing this out for all it’s worth. “I flung my crest into the river, in case you hadn’t noticed I am not wearing it.”
Aro raised his head, and the small threatening movement made his insane boost of courageous resistance float away. He wasn’t going to give in, but Demetri remembered he might not stand a chance against the powerful old vampire, who was likely stronger and more skilled than he had ever shown any of them.
“What made you let her go?”
“What made me let Alice go after you assigned me to watch over her?” Demetri repeated, gathering his courage and making sure to rub it in.
“Yes, precisely.”
He took a deep breath, about to hit him with the speech he’d prepared in his head while hidden behind the statue.
“After Chelsea died – and I attempted to save her, by the way, consider it the last act I ever did as your servant – the spell was broken and I realized I had no more free will than Alice did. She hadn’t been bound to our organization, but you were planning it, weren’t you? I realized she had saved me by stopping me from interfering with Chelsea’s death, releasing me from the binds. It was a huge favor, and I paid it back by letting her escape while she could.”
“Ah,” Aro said sagely, nodding his head. “You could have saved Chelsea, and all of this could have been prevented.”
“I despised her,” Demetri said quickly.
“I see,” Aro said, as if he could complely understand.
“But I did try to save her, because I thought we were allies. I thought this was a coven, and I thought our power meant something,” Demetri continued. “Turns out it doesn't.”

The short answer is that it stands for "all-human." It's a fanfic, particularly a Twilight fanfic, where all the supernatural elements have been stripped from the fic. The long answer is that it was this spidery mess in Twilight fanfic that actually changed the entire American publishing industry (not even kind of kidding).
Fascinatingly for me as a canon writer who is also interested in language, it led to the utter destruction of the word "canon" among Twific readers. In most fandoms, you have canon-compliant fics alongside alternate-universe fics--either they stick to the canon or they don't. In Twific, you had AH, which is actually a subset of AU but it contrasted with "has vampires." So people re-interpreted "AU" to mean "has vampires" and the idea of canon-compliant fics was just...erased. It was and still is vexing, to say the least.
