Mueller's Two-headed Snake (Micrelaps muelleri), family Micrelapidae, Israel

Mildly venomous, rear-fanged.

The snakes in this family used to be in the family Atractaspididae, but were put into their own family in 2023.

The common name comes from the habit (of some snakes in this family) of holding up the tail in a position that makes it look like the snake's head, as a defensive posture.

Not the best quality, but I wanted to give you a cool throwback. This is a two-headed snake I saw in New Orleans in 2015!

Polycephaly in snakes is very rare, occurring in approximately 1 in 100,000 births. However, polycephaly (two heads as a result of an incomplete splitting of an embryo) more often occurs in reptiles than mammals.

Had a dream last night and I literally have to write this down immediately. You guys wanna hear about it?

I was caring for a snake, a very vibrant bright orange and copper snake with black eyes. She was a baby and she just started shedding and I was so proud of her! Look it her go!

And in the middle of shedding a two-headed snake split off from her completely, out of the base of her head. She seemed very tired and her poor 2 headed twins didn’t survive very long. I gently held and inspected their corpse in my hand as she continued to shed.

The two headed snake split a little below their heads, with no kinks in their spine elsewhere. Practically they should have survived, they even bit me a few times! It didn’t hurt and it was honestly adorable, But then they just. Died. They had about the same coloration as their sister with the exception of black speckles.

Now, at that point some older ladies from my childhood church came to visit. One of them put anime Mary Poppins on the TV and the other 2 asked what I was doing. I said caring for snakes. That one was shedding and the one in my hand just died.

One of them went “oh good.” She meant it was good that the snake was dead. One of them went “oh no dear I’m so sorry. That’s sad.” And the third lady tried to rip the shed off the little gal. I begged her to stop because she’ll hurt it. Eventually I said if she continues the snake will rightfully bite her and she got scared and threw the snake at me.

I took the poor thing from her and did my best to sooth the snakeling. The little one coiled around my fingers

And then I woke up.

And now I wanna go back and comfort the poor baby more because that’s such a stressful day for her. I wanna hold her again I already miss her. I already miss the dream snake. Is that weird? Is it weird I miss the dream snake? I’m probably the only person I know irl who’d miss a dream snake. Or want to hold a snake in general.

I know snakes in dreams are usually a bad sign but is it a bad omen if I love the snake? If it’s my little one?
