SUMMARY: On the rooftop of his gallery in New York City, David and a friend get introspective (and high) about life and love.

Rec [written by petalwrites]: This pre-canon slice of introspection is such a beautiful and emotional look into David’s headspace before Schitt’s Creek. It really makes you appreciate his growth throughout the show. (It does feature a canon character from another universe, but no knowledge of that show is needed.)

SUMMARY: David observes an autumnal spectacle.

Rec [hullomoon]: I love introspection and this drabble is so poetic. If you want to be reminded of a crisp autumn day and the path life has given you, I high recommend.

SUMMARY: David is concerned, but unsurprised, when Alexis puts on a familiar show.

Rec [hullomoon]: I love reading fics that dissect Alexis & Ted’s breakup. With David focusing on how he and Alexis both handled them in the past, it’s nice to see what’s changed.

SUMMARY: When Twyla Sands' pumpkin pie disappears from the table, she goes on a quest to discover the thief.

Rec [written by petalwrites]: This is the insight into Twyla’s family that we all needed. Full disclosure, this slice of absolute silliness was written as a glorious gift for me, personally, but I highly recommend it to anyone who needs something to make them smile. It also now has an accompanying podfic!

Rec [written by doingthemost]: I didn't know I needed Twyla as Taylor Swift until suddenly, we had it. Seriously, if you're at all a Taylor Swift fan or a Twylexis fan—bonus if you're both, of course!—this is the fic for you. It's a pitch perfect AU (pun intended!) and so much fun.

Happy Wednesday! We’ve got just the fics to help you get through the mid-week slump. Today’s releases include some good ol’ friends-to-lovers, strangers-to-friends, and even stranger-to-reluctant-confidant. These are the kinds of stories that feel like a warm hug… and who doesn’t need a hug these days, huh?

DAY 3 REVEALS

You Were There All Along [Stevie/Twyla - M - 19,794]

“I can’t tell you when exactly it started. I don’t remember. It just seemed like one day we were relative strangers and the next day, Twyla Sands was suddenly there. A presence in my life.”

Stevie and Twyla were best friends in high school. They both had unstable home lives and found comfort and solace in each other. After high school they drifted apart when life got in the way, but they always showed up for each other when it mattered.

Years later, Stevie reflects on their friendship and wonders if it’s possible that they could be something more.

There’s a room in the cottage that’s always ready for her, whenever she needs it.

It’s not a guest room. David and Patrick were very clear on that. The third bedroom is the guest room. But this, this is her room.

There’s Rose Apothecary products in the bathroom, even though she’d still use the drugstore brand if left to her own devices. There’s the old, battered quilt on the foot of the bed that David said didn’t go with the decor, but left it there for her anyway because he knew how much she loved it. There’s even a Sarah McLachan poster on the wall.

There’s a room in the cottage that’s always ready for her, and that’s why she’s definitely not crying on this airplane.

A Ray of Light [Gen (Patrick, Ray) - NR - 1,477]

Patrick needs a change, and contacts Ray Butani about a job.

“What can I do for you, Connor?” he asks.

“Right.” Connor clears his throat too. “I was actually hoping I could get your advice on something?”

“Oh, now you want my advice?”

Connor groans. “Are you gonna make me regret this?”

“I mean, probably,” David says, pretending to inspect his nails. “I don’t give very good advice.”

a.k.a., Connor actually needs David's advice this time.

His Very Nearness [Gen (David, Twyla) - G - 1,237]

In his early days in Schitt’s Creek, David finds a less than traditional method of caring for his mental health. His friendship with Ted and Twyla gets him through, and he maybe makes a new friend as well.

"Alexis? Honey?" He tries a laugh. "You're making me worry."

"Sorry! Sorry." She laughs, too, and it sounds closer to the Alexis who learned to love him in Schitt's Creek. "I'm just... I don't know how to say this, I guess? But." He hears her take a deep breath before the rest of her words come out in a rush.

"I'm queer, Dad. And I wanted you to know."

When Alexis comes out to Johnny, he does some reflecting about his two children.

Rare & Gen Rec Round-Up - January & February 2023

SUMMARY: Stevie didn't think Ruth knowing how she takes her coffee would mean so much, as well as other realizations.

Rec [written by hullomoon]: The unspoken way a partner learns little details about you is something that makes me 🤧 Woven throughout their travels, this is a perfect Stevie/Ruth fic.

Auld Acquaintance by @treepyful, Stevie/Ruth, rated T, 2840 words

SUMMARY: Ruth gets separated from her friends on NYE, but the night manages to go up from there.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: Okay, I might be biased, since this was written for me, but I love that this fic puts Stevie and Ruth into situations and tropes that we don't usually see for them. It's a breath of fresh air for these two, and the momentum towards the end is so fun!

SUMMARY: If Patrick had made a very different decision, and put the happiness of others before his own.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: Thank goodness for the "alternate universe" tag on this one! This ficlet is gut-wrenching, but also so wonderfully done at the same time.

SUMMARY: Stevie wants Twyla. In every tender, gentle way her girlfriend gives her. Something Stevie had never expected, and now something she would not be without.

SUMMARY: After David and Patrick’s wedding, Stevie and Alexis spend the night together. Wink wink nudge nudge

Rec [written by hullomoon]: I am so here for the headcanon that Stevie and Alexis hook up at David and Patrick’s wedding. Stevie’s confession is well-done here and makes her first kiss with Alexis so satisfying.

SUMMARY: On a January weekend, as a storm rolls in, Alexis Rose rolls into Schitt’s Creek too, much to Twyla’s surprise.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: I love the childhood friends trope, and we don't have enough of it in this corner of the Schitt's Creek fandom! This is such a fun take on Alexis and Twyla, haunting and moody and full of a quiet, hopeful optimism all at the same time.

you spoke to me so sweetly by @hippolotamus, Alexis/Twyla, rated E, 2653 words

SUMMARY: Alexis hums her appreciation, letting her eyes fall closed while Twyla repeats the circuitous route, and breathing in the blend of lavender and lemon oil her wife insisted upon for “calm and good luck”. The temporary serenity only lasts for three or four passes until a light knock at the door interrupts. She doesn’t try to hide her instant pout when the gentle pressure disappears and she’s forced to open her eyes again.

Dr. Rist breezes inside, far too perky in Alexis’s opinion. Perhaps it’s a good sign. Despite her nerves, Alexis plasters her PR smile on, and clasps Twyla’s hand – the only tell she’ll allow to indicate she’s worried while they wait to find out what kind of life changing the appointment will be.

“Well,” Dr. Rist says. “Alexis. Twyla. Sorry to keep you waiting. Let’s begin, shall we?”

Rec [written by doingthemost]: Mind the tags on this one, as there's some medical angst a fair amount of hurt/comfort, but if you want to feel warm and taken care of just like Alexis and Twyla take care of each other in this beautiful lil' fic, look no further.

Summary: I only drink red wine. She remembers saying those words to David years ago, and she had been telling the truth. She'd never been attracted to another woman, which is why her feelings for Twyla slammed into her like a freight train.

Rec [written by samwhambam]: I really enjoyed this fic. It felt like a nice, warm hug of feelings. It was gentle and the whole thing is the equivalent of the ‘oh’ we love so much. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something short and sweet and full of feelings!

Summary: "How, um... How do you feel about... flavored wines?"

"What, like Herb Ertlinger's fruit wines?" Stevie pulls a face, obviously not having caught on yet.

David takes a deep, only-mildly-mortified breath, hoping she will. "No, like. I mean, what really is a red wine, anyways? Like, sure, it's got a different color from white, but different people like them because they taste different. So I was just wondering. Since you're a red drinker. Is it... the label, or the grapes, or... the taste? What if--I mean--you made a wine out of white grapes but you pissed off Dionysus or the scientists worked their magic or whatever and it came out tasting like a red?"

"Okay, David, I think you are vastly overestimating how picky I am about wine--and also how much I, like, know about wine? Because I know this is a metaphor but I have no idea what you're talking about."

A reimagining of the events of Carl's Funeral & Honeymoon (where David and Stevie talk sexuality, hook up, and break up) in which David Rose is a trans man.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: I loved the original in this series, and as a sucker for David/Stevie, I was thrilled to see this new installment! I love this reinterpretation of the canon; the characterization and dialogue are so on point, I would absolutely believe that this is canon.

Wishing for an Endless Night by jmda4, Alexis Rose, NR, 594 words

Summary: Alexis tries to cope with the idea of leaving her family.

Rec [written by petalwrites]: This short-and-sweet fic explores what’s going through Alexis’s head before she leaves for New York, and it’s really touching! It really highlights how much she grew throughout the show, which is one of my favorite parts of Schitt’s Creek.

The Witch of Schitt’s Creek by @tyfinn, Gen, NR, 1115 words

Summary: Roland Jr. comes to David and Patrick for help when he thinks he sees a witch.

Rec [written by petalwrites]: Something about this really reads like part of a Halloween episode of a sitcom for me — which I’m a sucker for. D/P makes a brief appearance, but the real star here is Roland Jr. It’s a funny, sweet fic about a misunderstanding so true to how kids think. I could definitely see it happening in a future episode of the show.
