Inside Young Money pt. 1

Here at Almost Revelatory, we believe that Young Money Entertainment is the shit.  It may have something to do with having been founded by Lil Wayne, and it may have something to do with the undeniable charm of Drizzy Drake, but mostly it’s because Young Money’s artists have style for days, unique flows, and most importantly, they don’t give a fuck about you.

But how much do we actually know about the label?  How much do we know about Lil Wayne?  About Drake, Nicki, and the variety of eclectic artists who make sure the well always runs deep?

Well, the answer is: we know a lot.  But just like our cat Pippa could always be fatter, we could always know more about our favorite record label.  Once a month, we’ll tackle a new facet of the Young Money empire, but this month, we’re starting with the basics, namely

-Where did Young Money come from? & -Who let that happen?

Young Money Entertainment was founded in 2005 by Lil Wayne as an imprint of Cash Money Records.

Cash Money Records was founded in 1991 by New Orleans brothers Bryan “Baby” and Ronald “Slim” Williams as a way to get out of the projects and into a good place.   Well,  by the time Baby became better known as Birdman, Cash Money Records had transformed itself from a small-regional label to one of the most successful and prolific rap labels of all time - if that isn’t a good place, I don’t know what is.   The first wave of Cash Money artists may have enjoyed mild regional success, but  ultimately failed to gain a substantial following in the national rap scene.  Cash Money artists distinguished themselves with their ability to fuse traditional New Orleans Bounce music with the highly popular Gangster Rap of the 1990s.  Cash Money’s original roster included Kilo G, U.N.L.V. (Uptown Niggas Living violently), and Lil Slim.

In 1995, Cash Money signed new artists B.G. and Lil Wayne.

And that’s pretty much the early days at Cash Money Records.  Next month we’ll focus on Cash Money’s golden boy, and Young Money founder Lil Wayne.
