Setsubun is a yearly event meant to usher in good fortune and ward off the demons: geiko and maiko do so by dressing in obake costumes or unusual hairstyles and performing at the shrine.

Maiko Kimiaki and Kimiharu performed for us, then participated in traditional mamemaki with geiko Umeyakko dressed in an Edo-period costume, geiko Ayachiyo dressed as a maiko, maiko Umeyuu and Fumikiyo!

Shigyoshiki 2026: Sumiya family - geiko Umeyuki, Umeyakko and maiko Umeyuu, Kimiaki and Kimiharu made their rounds for the New year opening ceremony

At the end of summer, we held our Yukatakai - a private event showing off everyone's progress in the arts!

Natori geiko Umeyakko performed the dance 'Uchimizu', geiko Ayachiyo performed 'Fude no kasa', and maiko Kimiaki, Kimiharu and shikomi Eiko performed 'Gion kouta', accompanied by other geiko and maiko as musicians.

This week, we held a ceremony called Shigyoshiki: the new year opening ceremony. Hard working maiko and geiko were awarded for their efforts in the previous year, and after that everyone visited ochaya in the hanamachi to ask for their continued support in 2025!

On February 25th, we held our annual Baikasai: plum blossom viewing and tea ceremony public event. Geiko Umeyakko performed ryurei chado with her assistant minarai Kimiaki, and maiko Mitsuyo performed hakobi chado with maiko Terutsuyo

Setsubun 2024: maiko Terutsuyo performed the dance Hime Sanja to celebrate the beginning of spring, after which Terutsuyo, Mitsuyo and geiko Ayatsuki and Umeyakko in bridal costumes joined them for the mamemaki - bean throwing ceremony

We celebrated Setsubun in Miyajimacho: the beginning of spring - at Hoto Tenman-gu shrine, maiko Fukuyo performed Hime sanja for the audience, and geiko got dressed up in costumes and threw lucky beans from the stage! Geiko Umeyakko and Ayatsuki dressed in schoolgirl costumes and geiko Umeyuki dressed in a pikachu costume. Bad luck out, good luck in!
