July 20th, 2025: A new minarai has started on her journey to becoming a geiko! Tomikiwa (富癸輪) of Tomikiku (富菊) in Gion Higashi will be starting her journey as a geiko, not a maiko, as she is too old to be a maiko. However, this only makes her journey harder as she needs to know both the maiko repertoire and geiko repertoire before debuting! New Geisha in Hachioji: In this promotion video for Hachioji Odori, you can see Hangyoku Hitsuki together with Chako 茶こ (middle) and Kosuzu 小鈴 (right). It's possible that Kosuzu already debuted as a Geisha, although there was no official anouncement. Chako is still a Minarai. Chako and Kosuzu joined their respective Okiya last year (2025). As we can learn here, Kosuzu is a Hachioji native!

Osaka Geiko and Maiko 1910s

A group of geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) from Osaka, with a young girl wearing the O-tabako-bon hairstyle indicating that she is about seven or eight years old, possibly a minarai (watching apprentice). Possibly Kobe?

A lot has been happening in Miyajimacho in the recent days.

Our shikomi has passed her exam and is making her minarai debut today - this also means the date for her misedashi, or official debut, is set! Fumikiyo, imouto of Ayatsuki, will have her debut on December 12th!

The uchi iwai - a paper wrapping for tenugui gifts given to patrons and businesses - features her misedashi date as well as information about her name, okiya and older sister, with her first hanameishi attached. After a year of hard work and learning, she will make her first steps as a maiko. Please support her in her future career!

September 2021: Aoi-tayuu, of Suehiro okiya, posted as series of photos as a time lapse. On the left: a photo of Aoi-tayuu in 1999, age 12, debuting as the Furisode-tayuu of the Wachigaiya okiya most likely during their April tayuu-dochu. In the middle: a photo of Aoi-tayuu during her Tayuu Debut in 2014, age 27, at the Shimogamo Shrine. On the right: a photo of Aoi-tayuu during an ozashiki in June, which likely makes her about 33-34.

New Minarai in Kamishichiken!

Meet Minarai Umechisa-san of Umeno okiya!! I hadn't heard of her before so it was a nice surprise to come across~ I think she looks really cute, I also enjoy the more mature motifs of her kimono. Fans and I think water swirls, also a nice deep purple color~ what do you think? Minarai normally wear very childish motifs to draw attention to their youth and cute look~ I guess I appreciate more classic and mature motifs^^

กุมภาพันธ์ 2562: ไมโกะฝึกหัด Suzuno (โอกิยะ Fukushima) จากเขต Gion Kobu ในจังหวัด Kyoto

ไมโกะฝึกหัด (見習い : Minarai) เป็นช่วงเวลา 1 เดือนของ Shikomi ก่อนได้เลื่อนขึ้นเป็นไมโกะเต็มตัว โอบิของ Minarai จะสั้นกว่าโอบิของไมโกะ เรียกโอบิที่สั้นกว่าประเภทนี้ว่า “Handara Obi” ที่แปลตรงตัวได้ว่าโอบิที่สั้นกว่าโอบิ Darari ของไมโกะครึ่งหนึ่ง หน้าที่ของ Minarai คือติดตามรุ่นพี่ไมโกะของเธอไปงานเลี้ยง เพื่อสังเกตและเรียนรู้ว่าการเป็นเกอิชาจริงๆ ต้องทำอะไรบ้าง
