- Uma always got looked down on for her short size and because Ursula wasn’t all that terrifying compared to other villains, so she tries to never underestimate anyone and doesn’t believe people when they say Carlos is a whimp
- because she and Carlos went to different schools (Dragon Hall and Serpent Prep), Uma never sees his intelligence first hand. If she did, she would want Carlos on her crew
- even though Mal and Uma hate each other, they respect each other. Uma knows Mal wouldn’t have someone on her crew unless they were special, so she always keeps an eye on Carlos
- very formal to each other, for Isle standards. They are technically in different crews, but Carlos doesn’t seem to care much about that and he’s one of the few that never called her ‘Shrimpy’. She’ll mock him for joining Mal’s gang, but words don’t affect Carlos
- Carlos will sometimes trade old sewing needles (which can be used as fish hooks) for some food at Ursula’s
- once they’re in Auradon and Mal and Uma are kind of civil, she flirts with Carlos just to upset Mal and because watching Carlos stutter and turn red is kind of funny and not technically good or evil
- Uma also encourages Harry to flirt with Carlos because Mal gets so irritated and defensive over them teasing one of her crew

First impression: “OH?” Just like that lol. I watched the “Rotten to the Core” music video on Youtube when Disney was hyping up the release of D1 and Carlos’ whole aesthetic caught my eye immediately. He was my favourite before he even opened his mouth. I liked the song, but I’m not sure I would have watched the movie if not for how quickly I adopted Carlos haha. I loved everything about his character in D1, but I was too proud to admit I’d enjoyed a DCOM that much, so. :’) Five years later, my SECOND first impression was “d*sney, I will see you in court, because this character is mine now” lmao.
Impression now: This is my son, Carlos. If anything happens to him… <3 No, but seriously lmao. I have said it before and I will say it again: Carlos is my favourite character in media, not just in Descendants. He brings me so much happiness and comfort and amusement and catharsis and inspiration and just *fist clench* I love him okay. I’m so glad he exists. <3
Favorite moment: Hmmm, there’s so many iconic moments… but one of my faves is that deleted Jaylos scene when he tells Jay he’ll miss Carlos the most. Jay’s amusement seems to belie a certain amount of surprise at how brazen that statement is. I love that moment because it shows how much Carlos has grown and how much confidence he’s gained in himself. More than confidence, even. It’s about self-worth. I just think about that scene sometimes.
Idea for a story: God, I really want to write an Umlos oneshot where Carlos almost drowns as a kid (on the Isle) after getting knocked off the docks, but he wakes up on this quiet rocky beach with a vague memory of a mermaid saving him, which makes no sense because the closest thing to a mermaid he knows exists on the Isle is Ursula and she’d never have saved him. Anyway, he goes back to that beach and starts trying to teach himself how to swim in the shallows, not realizing that Uma’s watching him with amusement from behind some rocks because that’s her quiet spot and she didn’t think he’d come back, but there he is… looking like a dying fish in the surf.
Eventually, she takes pity on his attempts, though it starts out mocking, like, “Maybe if you weren’t kicking like your knees were on backwards…” And they end up becoming friends, as much as you can be on the Isle. It’s only at that point that Carlos admits he realized some time ago that Uma was the “mermaid” who saved him. She rolls her eyes at that, claiming she’s no mermaid, just a damn good swimmer, and yeah... she ends up introducing him to her ragtag crew, which includes Jay at the time, and so begins a very big and complicated poly relationship between the Sea Three and Core Four, the end.
Unpopular opinion: This is semi-canon/semi-fanon and not at all an unpopular opinion among my mutuals lol, but anyway... Carlos was never cowardly or emotionally weak, the boy just has a hella anxiety disorder and PTSD, made worse on the Isle by malnutrition that stunted his growth. What he lacked in physical strength, he always made up for with quick wit and an inventive mind. No way he’d have survived otherwise.
He’s a tough kid, he just has involuntary reactions to certain triggers, like the way he jumps when Jay barks at him in D1 or the way he holds the shield up and goes into the fetal position when he realizes Jay’s going to physically run him down on the tourney field. More subtly, it shows in how he’s the last to choose good during the coronation scene because he’s thinking ahead to how their parents will react.
That may seem to contradict his characterization in those moments where we actually get to see him interact with Cruella in the movies: the way he rolls his eyes at her antics on the Isle and the way he yells at her during the Family Day scene, for example. It’s not actually a contradiction though. That’s just one way anxiety and trauma can manifest. Carlos’ reaction to danger/stress changes dramatically depending on his environment and the triggers he’s facing. He “fights” (Family Day scene), “flees” (meeting Dude), as well as both “freezes” and “fawns” (in front of Maleficent at the start of D1). Those are just some examples. I don’t know how to end this ramble, so let’s just...
Favorite relationship: *whispers* Jaylos (I know, I know, I’m a broken record lmao). Okay, but I adore Rotten OT4, as well. I have a special soft spot for Marlos, can’t deny that, but Carvie has my heart, too. And as for BROTPs, like… Janelos is super cute and Chadlos is fucking hilarious, so there’s that. (I’m also really soft about Umlos, but I live in rarepair hell with that one jkdljaklgdsjk.)
Favorite headcanon: Carlos is nonbinary! This is a headcanon I hold dear to my heart. I haven’t written (or rather published) anything where I state explicitly that he’s nonbinary in fic, but just know that if I’m writing Carlos… he’s nonbinary and that’s a fact.
