I’ve found as a literature major that there are sometimes classes that sound interesting, but that I can’t actually take because I’ve already filled up my six-class schedule with more urgent requirements. It can be hard to pass up an upper-level class that looks really good and might not be offered again while I’m on campus, so auditing the class is an excellent way to go.

This semester, I’m auditing Modern Catholic Fiction with Dr Thomas Stanford, and it’s been a very enjoyable experience. We’ve read mostly short stories, by such authors as G. K. Chesterton, Walter Macken, and Flannery O’Connor, but we also read a few novels, including The Hobbit and The Power and the Glory. In class, we discuss the stories’ themes, symbolism, and writing style, and especially how the authors use these artistic elements to illustrate the truths of Catholicism in a creative and enjoyable way. Most of the stories we read have overtly Catholic elements in them, or have an allegorical element that’s pretty easy to see, but some, such as The Hobbit, are just stories written by Catholics, so that they contain universal truths about good and evil, heroes and villains, without specifically preaching the Catholic faith. We’ve discussed how Catholic artists have a wealth of imagery and ideas stored in their imaginations from the liturgy, the Bible, and the stories of saints gone before us, and how these can help shape the way they write almost unconsciously. I’ve really enjoyed the stories we’ve read, and I’ve been fascinated by the number of different approaches Catholics have taken with their art throughout even just the 20th century. I’ve always wanted to write stories myself someday, and this class has helped inspire me with examples to build on, without giving me extra papers and tests on top of my other six classes.

Another option, for those who want to know what a certain professor’s teaching style is like, or to get just a brief glimpse of a course without committing to even a full 2 1/2 hours per week, is getting a professor’s permission to sit in on a class just for a day. It’s not an official part of the Christendom experience (unless you’re a prospective student visiting the college), but most professors here are kind enough to let a curious student drop by now and then. Just last week, for example, I sat in on Dr DeFrancis’ Old Testament class, because I’d heard his lecture on Hosea was particularly enjoyable. I’ve also sat in on Dr McGuire’s upper-levels in the past, because his lectures are always exceptional, and sometimes I’ve been in classes when a fellow student was stopping by to see whether it’s a class they’d like to take sometime, or just to see what it’s like.

I think the fact that Christendom is a small, friendly community, where the professors really get to know their students, helps make this possible. The professors here are only too willing to help us all learn, and they encourage each of us to broaden our horizons, take classes outside of our majors, and basically just learn and improve as much as possible. I encourage everyone who’s considering enrolling at Christendom to make an official visit sometime and experience a class or two, and I encourage everyone who already goes here to go above just the classes we have to take and discover what else you find interesting, absorbing every bit of knowledge you can while you have the chance.
