i grew up around muslims, i am also trans and leftist.

people in every queer and trans community i go to set an expectation: i should ofrever abandon my muslim past, i should explicitly stop associating yourself with it whatsoever, you either get to be queer or you either get to be raised-muslim.

in reality, there's no such expectation for christianity, and none of them are ready to dismantle their "inner christian" in their heads as much as they expect be to dismantle my "inner muslim"

none fo them get to admit how most first world countries are culturally christian, because christianity is "default" to them, as well as first world, as well as white.

me having a complicated relationship with islam doesn't mean i absolutely despise every piece of it. it means i distanced myself from ummah, but won't hear islamic criticism from non ex muslims at all, because you expect us to dismantle "our inner muslims" in ways you aren't ready to dismantle imperialism and racism in you.

your expectation is us "acting white", you don't want us unless we're that, which means you don't want us at all.

a lot of people claiming to want to uplift brown queer voices and such don't procced to do anything meaningful for them, or for brown people at all. it's just virtue signaling, homonationalism. you'd only care of brown people being queer, and you want the "brown" part of it gone as much as possible.

a lot of people say they want the leftist agenda to stop being us centric and imperialist, but then it's just pretending to care about it. you already made is so little and unhearable you'd have to get out of your way to seek for us speaking. then you'd not seek or if you find us, you will just pass by. hoping someone else would amplify the voice you took from us? and that someone else would hope for that too, so what?

you want us only when we agree with everything usa says about us, you want us until our lives don't put you into too much discomfort. when they put you into too much discomfort, you don't ask why, you'll restore the comfort by banishing us again. your tolerability of us is so intricately conditional, to meet those a third worlder has to build themselves into a first worlder mindset. this is your (inter)nationalism hey.

If the world was a just and rational place there would be outrage that the Yankees planted their flag on Earth's moon. There would be outrage that the Americans seemingly claimed the fucking moon for themselves. That the moon which has held such significance across countries, across continents, across time- now has the American flag on it. Could you imagine if the Soviets got there? I mean we'd be (rightfully) pissed. But the USA gets to put their eyesore of a flag on a celestial object without objection. Why did we as a planet let them get away with that???

USAmericans fascinate me endlessly. the politics posts with zero mention of the US at all because of the assumption that everyone reading it is also american. the number of times I've been called stupid or crazy or even just evil in the comments for mentioning a life experience I have as a non-american. the strange assumption that american laws, experiences, politics, culture, and social expectations apply universally to every country. the extremely bizarre (yet unfortunately sometimes correct due to the inescapable exposure to american news) assumption that everyone knows who famous americans are. absolutely baffling. can you imagine if I, a kiwi from aotearoa, did all this? it would be bonkers, right? it would make no sense at all. what you're imagining is exactly what every non-USAmerican experiences online. it's WILD.

I have a love-hate relationship with the Coquette/girlblogging community. Yes you can be feminine and dainty without the need to romanticize smoking, conservative imagery, EDs and predatory age gaps (Though I'm aware some people post this stuff as a way to cope with trauma).

Don't even get me started on how the community's views on (hyper)femininity and girlhood are often very much white and American-centric.

I always thought it was weird that Americans seem like a deeply uncurious people who are adverse to learning new things, but I remember I ordered a DNA test kit a couple of years ago from a US company and their instructional video made me realize “oh, American companies literally treat their userbase like idiots…. Got it.” It presented like it was made for a child, as if they didn’t expect me to understand what a gene is.

Everything is dumbed down for US audiences BY DESIGN. Authors from commonwealth countries have a very difficult time getting published with US firms unless they conform to US spelling because god forbid their poor yankee brains have to decipher the word “colour”. Canadian authors are constantly told that they have to set their stories in the US because US audiences won’t “relate” to us talking about our own experiences growing up in a country that’s literally right next to them, and then they read these localized stories, see they’re from a Canadian author, and have the takeaway that Canada’s basically the same as the US, which FURTHER justifies their expansionist propaganda campaign that’s only been ramping up against Canada in the last year or so.

Authors and filmmakers from other countries are often told to change their ending to make it “happy” for their US release (A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and The Descent are two very famous examples of this). As if their audience didn’t pick up a mystery series and horror movie, respectively, like… they knew what they were getting into, I’d assume.

Americans are constantly being infantilized by their own corporations, like… fuck, man, is it any wonder the rest of the world stereotypes them as dumb? I firmly believe the onus is still on them to go out and educate themselves about the rest of the world, and expose themselves to something outside of their very loud, expansive, US bubble, but they’re rarely given an incentive to. Their capital pushes the rest of the world to cater to them, edit themselves into something palatable for them. I’m so fucking sick of it.

Whenever I see someone on the internet refer to where they're from with a 2 letter acronym I just assume it's a US state. No one from anywhere else in the world would be as presumptuous to think I memorised every single shorthand for every single place in their country
