When TOS decided to take itself seriously in the movies, I don't think anyone stepped up their game as much as George Takei.

He knows what a presence his voice has and how to use it. He didn't have a lot to do, but by God he did it well. And when the time came to take on a captain's chair, I absolutely believed in Captain Hikaru Sulu.

He completely owns this. This is the look of dignified, righteous authority.

This man went from being in an American concentration camp to being a fucking Starfleet Captain.

I'll always be sad we haven't gotten more with him.

I kinda like the way that, sometime between Final Frontier and Undiscovered Country, Sulu was kind-of like, "You know what, guys? I'm really glad we're all friends and everything, but you're all so insanely co-dependent. I'm gonna finally go captain my own ship. No, it was great getting to pilot the Enterprise for a quarter of my life, but I think I'm ready to do my own thing."

And then his first order of business was to go buy some especially fragile teacups.

Happy birthday to the legend himself George Takei who is of course known to Star Trek fans as lieutenant commander Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of Captain Kirk's Enterprise and future Captain of the USS Excelsior.

George would appear as Sulu throughout Star Trek: TOS, The Animated Series and the following 6 movies.

He also appeared in Star Trek: Voyager as the Captain of the Excelsior during the season 3 episode "Flashback" where Tuvok is attempting to access his memories, but keeps being taken to his time serving with Sulu.

He has most recently reprised the role of Sulu in the Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series as well as having done various voiceover work for Star Trek video games. His status as a Star Trek legend is secured 🖖
