Abandoned in Utah, I stopped to photograph long-forgotten memories. Instead, my stop became much more, when I noticed a woman carrying a suitcase walking beside the road, holding out her thumb in desperate hopes of catching a ride. I pulled over and told her to jump in. The woman had just gotten out of the hospital, was leaving a dead-end relationship, and her only refuge was with friends in Salt Lake City. She slept the whole drive. I'm always leery of hitchhikers, but typically make exceptions when granted the opportunity to utilize discretion. In this case, I'm glad for helping, and it felt to me that the woman was on the right track to improving her circumstances for the long-term. She was determined and intelligent, and clearly deserved better than the hand she'd been dealt.
