here's the skipperskip piece i did for the @d20zinejam 🚀🚀 it was for mirror image ii, where artists reimagined works of art in the d20 setting! i ended up doing norm & skip as magritte's "the son of man" (1964). i call mine "the slug of man" and then flip-flop on whether or not man is short for norman, or just means the general all-inclusive man. it could also be called "the man of slug" tho; they belong to each other. :')

i looked up the meaning later and realized that it's actually quite perfect for them! grabbed the magritte quote from wikipedia that made me think so. :)) tiny essay about it under the cut haha.

you can grab this zine and 60 other ones in the d20 zine jam's charity bundle! it's pwyc, and all proceeds go to the United Nations' Occupied Palestinian Territory Humanitarian Fund! and shoutout to my irl bestie whose fave artist is magritte, even tho she'll prob never see this. love u!!!

there's just such an interplay with norman and skip about what is hidden and what is visible: the visibility of skip having taken over norman's body despite the way his slug body is hidden; norman's memories hidden behind the craniobolt; and skip looking into the mirror to address what is visible of norman (his face) so that he can hopefully access what's hidden (norman himself, unfortunately because skip has forcefully hidden him).

the mirror scene in particular also showcases both skip's conflict and intense feeling of interest in the hidden (norman), with the way he apologizes to norman about having had to slug him and what happened to him with weatherall, but confronts him with the (visible) truth that he is living norman's life better than norman did, and will continue to use his body. and the way skip leans in to kiss the mirror like he's trying to interact with the hidden the same way his friends have been interacting with him, but how it means more than a stupid joke when it comes on the heels of an apology and a galaxy-wide acknowledgement that they're better together in this way. i would further argue that norm reciprocates that when he sticks his tongue out and asks for skip to come slug him again--an implicit sort of acceptance that was hinted at before in the mirror scene, but not with norman explicitly present.

in sharing this body, both skip and norman are at once "the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present," and this conflict is catalyzed when skip first slugs norman, effectively hiding norman and becoming presently visible in norman's stead. for that reason, i do think it's kind of perfect that it's norman being hidden behind skip's slug body in this piece, with his eyes just barely peeking through. and there's an extra layer of intrigue just because skip's slug body is the most visible thing in this piece, but he's usually the one that is the most literally hidden. it's all very meta.

I hope we get a second season of a starstruck odyssey. I hope that Zac plays Norman and Skip in symbiosis and their new arc is navigating that and I . Don't think this would happen this is where I venture into "well you can hope" jokingly wishing territory but it would be so funny (and also just. Unironically compelling?? But y'know) if he committed to them having weird romantic/sexual tension (HE is the one who technically made them kiss twice) I want Zac Oyama to date himself for a twenty episode season it would be so funny (and genuinely interesting on a level I'm almost embarrassed about) do you see my vision
