About Norse Mythology (pt.3)

Vanaheimr (“Kingdom of the Vanir”) was, as its own name suggests, the Kingdom of the Vanir, a group of gods that was associated with fertility.

We don’t know much about them: their origins are unknown and their characteristics as well. There are, however, some famous Vanir like Freyr and Freya that used to live in Asgard.

We know that Vanir would accept incest, in fact Freyr and Freya used to be lovers when they still lived in Vanaheimr.

*Ahhh... I wish Thor and Loki lived in Vanaheimr too...*

Vanir women were also known to be skilled seiðkona, and this is why, I believe, we believe Frigga to be a Vanr in the first place.

Vanaheimr was placed ovest of Asgard.  Snorri Sturluson in his  “Ynglingar saga” mentions a river called Tanais, saying it divided Vanaheimr into three parts. This river is often associated with the Don, and in fact many believe that Norsemen would identify Vanahaimr with Asia.

The  vǫlva says that, once upon a time, there was a war between  Æsir and Vanir. Said war ended with peace between the two people, and, in order to keep that peace, hostages were exchanged. This is why Freyr and Freya lived in Asgard, where their love was rejected by the Æsir.

In Norse mythology, the world is not a whole, but is divided into parts. At 9 parts, but the number 9 is perfect. Many the worlds is often one and the same. Various version to dish up several names of one world. Once written that Helium is in Niflheim, and other times it is separate worlds.

9 worlds is:

1. Asgard - the seat of the gods of the Æsir

2. Alfheim - the seat of lucent Elves. Its master is Frey. He got it when grew the first tooth.

3. Vanaheimr - the seat of the gods of the family of the Vanir

4. Svartalfheim- - the seat of dwarfs and black elves

5. Midgard - the seat of the people

6. Muspelheim - fire kingdom peopled by the fire giants. Its master is Surtr.

7. Niflheim - the kingdom of ice

8. Jotunheim - the seat of the giants

9. Hel or Helheim - the land of the dead. It rule Hel, daughter of Loki

 Bifrost is a rainbow bridge between Asgard to Midgard. It's guardian is Heimdall. Bifrost ma do jaskini w czasie Ragnarok.
