Man it's been a long time since I've drawn these two. It was fun to come back to them.

So, I've come up with a wonderfully toxic relationship dynamic between Varian and Hubert.

The twist, they are both abusive. Hubert is psychological abusive and Varian is physically abusive.

We know Hubert has a matyr-complex, now imagine he dials up the cult leader thing up to eleven and actually beliefs he's Jesus Christ. And he beliefs that Varian is Satan. He needs Varian as this traitor symbol of evil to present himself as the light.

Make him a religious fanatic masochist.

He WANTS Varian to hurt him. He wants Varian to slap him beat him, humiliate and degrade him. He wants Varian to step on his neck and press his face into the dirt and it makes him feel like a god.

I like to think that Varian is a sadist. He enjoys hurting people, but he actually doesn't want to. Yes, it's exhilarating, it's like a drug, but Varian also doesn't want to be a bad person. That what ties him to Hubert. He feels slightly less bad about hurting a scumbag like him. But he's also smart enough to know how messed up the situation is. And Hubert knows that too. That's how he keeps Varian around. He's not just a prisoner. He could leave but he stays because he enjoys it.

Honestly, it's kind of like the relationship between Lapis and Jasper. At first glance you wouldn't guess who's the physical abuser but it's toxic for both of them.

I also think that Hubert would slowly ask for more, he would encourage or demand Varian to keep going further to the point when Varian tells him that to do so he would have to kill him and Hubert would only smile maniacally and tell him to do it.

When it comes to ships like Vigcup, Pompous Pep or Varidrew I'm always faced with the same problem, and before you ask no it's not that these ships are toxic or gross

It's that the sexual dynamics are always the same

Let the younger man top, let the older man be submissive, be more varied and diverse, be imaginative

Disclaimer, because some people fuss about it: Everyone in this picture is over 18, Varian is, like, 20 in this outfit. Now, to get to the picture itself. My IG has this dramatic thing like a trailer that says “When Varian went on his quest to find the totems, he decided to leave his bad mistakes in the past. Too bad his mistakes are mobile and ready to haunt him.” Dramatic, right? Something I gotta say about this picture, though. Actually, about my feelings on Andrew in general. 

In this picture, Andrew is possessed by a Disciple of Zhan Tiri I was still developing. Andrew, to try to save Varian from him, had forced the Disciple to inhabit his body, but he was too weak to keep him down and ended up being possessed and controlled by the guy, More on this Disciple later, promise. This picture takes place during one of my fics “Haunted”, which is on AO3. But, and this may be controversial, I don’t think Andrew would actually hurt Varian himself. Not canonly. I honestly don’t think he would hurt anyone, since he not only hesitated to kill Cassandra, but also to drop Varian from the airship. And Varian showed no indication that he feared Andrew, just that he was sad about them hurting Rapunzel and then, later, Andrew breaking his promise to not hurt anyone is what set Varian off and made him betray him. Because he broke his promise. But he still didn’t get hit by him, he looked more embarrassed than anything, and didn’t even resist when he was put in the cell, not only unharmed but with his weapons still on him. Does that sound like someone being abused? No. Therefore, I believe that Andrew not only didn’t hurt him, but that he also protected him from the predator guards. One of which being the Disciple that Andrew later tries to trap in his own body.

Updated my Varidrew playlist. It spans a very broad timeline of their dynamic from very impressionable S2 Varian getting taken in by Andrew's charms to the fallout in the S3 premiere and Varian processing his feelings of betrayal to an eventual re-connection later down the line.

The vibes are quite varied due to this, and the fact that it's kinda a mix of their POVs, but it's meant to convey all the messy layers and depths I think this relationship could cover. Even when it's deeply toxic I still think Andrew has some genuine feelings of care towards Varian too. 90/10 rule and all that.
