It'll be so funny if u draw Dionysus and Varuni beefing (they're siblings in my mind) while Ariadne and Varuna are sipping tea together watching them brawl
Dionysus just wanted his wine 😔
Bahubali: The Confusion
Chapter 1
.
.
.
“BHALLALDEVA WAKE UP!”
Someone had thrown atleast a gallon of water on his head, or so he thought as he gasped awake.
Confused and drenched Bhallaldeva looked around. Only to find his mother glaring at him with a water jar in her hand. While his father stood behind her with his usual grumpy expression. Muttering something to himself that only him and the Parameshwara knew.
Before he could even process what was happening his mother strode out of his chambers like thunder.
“Come to the court hall as soon as possible,” his father said, before throwing that same disgust-y look at him and following his mother out.
______
“THEY HAVE RAN AWAY. BOTH OF THEM HAVE RUN AWAY!! AND THE AUDACITY TO LEAVE THIS LETTER TO MY FACE WITH JUST ONE GOLD COIN. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THEM”
Now in the court, standing infront of his mother — who by the way was pacing and yelling about honour and pride and something — Bhalla was even more confused. More so with the fact that Bahubali was in the same situation as him.
He too was bearing the same expression and cluelessness as him as he stood next to him. Not to mention he didn't understood a single thing his mother was yelling about.
Just moments ago he had been peacefully sleeping, and by the look on Bahu's face he was sure, Bahu had been doing the same as well.
Bhalla had no clue what was happening. And he was too afraid of getting yelled at infront of everyone to ask his mother.
He wanted to ask his father — who still looked like someone had forced him to smell that horsedunk him and Bahu had once dumped on his head as kids — who was sitting at his usual spot about what was happening. But decided against it. He wasn't really in the mood to talk to two crazy people just after waking up from his precious sleep.
So he turned towards Bahu, signalling him with the language of eye contact to do something. But that dumbass just tilted his head at him, not understanding a single thing Bhall said- or eyed- or whatever you call moving your eye ball in a weird round motion.
Then only did Bhalla noticed the absence of Varuni and Devsena. From the moment he had woken up till now, he hadn't seen any of the two ladies. It wasn't like they can just disappear... Especially when his mother was having a screaming session so early in the morning. They should have been present in the court as well right?
Bhalla tried his eye communication on Bahu once again. And to his surprise Bahu understood that. Even replied to it by blinking his eyes a couple of times.
Turns out he too had noticed the absence of their wives. And even the absence of Kattappa during such a crucial time was uncommon Bahu said. Or blinked.
Then only did him and Bahu both focused on what his mother actually was saying.
“HOW CAN THEY BOTH JUST RUN AWAY WITH THE ENTIRE ROYAL TREASURE IN A SINGLE NIGHT WITHOUT LEAVING EVEN A TRACE?!!? DID THEY VANISH FROM THE EARTH'S SURFACE OR WHAT? THIS IS DISHONOUR TO THE RAJPARIVAR. DISHONOUR TO THE GREAT KINGDOM OF MAHISHMATI. DISHONOUR TO ME, RAJMATA SHIVAGAMI-”
Wait what? Who ran away?
Bhalla's thought had started to connect the dots slowly now. So he looked at Bahu again, who now was narrowing his eyes at him and then lifted his brows high up.
‘Is she talking about Devsena and Varuni?’
Bhalla understood what Bahu was trying to say- or blink. He was thinking of the same thing as well. Otherwise why would his mother be screaming so early in the morning, or his father be looking like an annoyed three year old, or his mother will drown him in his sleep, or most importantly...
‘Why would the two be absent from the court?’
Ohh there goes Bahu! Always stealing his spotlight. This time he was moving his eyes like a Kathakali dancer. How did he even learn that-
But he was right. Why would both the ladies be missing if it was not them who had ran away, as his mother was shouting about.
Yet to be absolutely sure their wives have ran away, and they weren't just speculating — which by the way would earn both of them a temporary ban from either of their chambers for a month if their wives got to know — they decided it would be best to ask and confirm the news before.
But the question was. Who was brave enough to face an erupting Rajmata and ask about it?
Definitely not him. Neither Bahu. They might have faught some really fucked up enemies, earning some name and fame. But facing Rajmata? That too in such a mood? Ohh they both would rather stay back a hundred miles.
Yet knowledge was necessary, and that is why Bahu decided to wiggle his brows at him. Urging him to go ask his mother.
‘Why must I be the one asking?’
‘Because you are older’
‘So what? You ask her you are younger’
‘...No you do it’
‘You do it’
‘No you’
“No you”
“No you”
“You”
“You-”
“AHEM!”
His father's very deliberate and very fake cough made it's way to his ears. And he realised that amidst arguing with Bahu in eye language, they had both somehow started to push eachother towards his mother. And whisper yell as well.
Before he could react anymore, his mother did a sharp turn towards him and Bahu. Bhalla wasn't even sure how the force she used to turn her head didn't dislocate her skull. But he guessed she was just really special.
Deciding someone will have to be brave and ask the question he opened his mouth to get with it.
“Maa what has happened?”
....
And behold Bahu, again taking his spotlight. Dumbass would never let him be at peace.
But this time he wouldn't complain, he was glad the next strikes of thunder from his mother's mouth wasn't going to be directed at him atleast.
“YOUR WIVES HAVE RAN AWAY! THE ROYAL TREASURY IS EMPTY! HOW CAN YOU EVEN ASK WHAT HAS HAPPENED? THEY HAVE RUN AWAY WITH ALL THE TREASURE YOU IDIOT”
Ok he was wrong. The screams were directed at both him and Bahu. But that wasn't the main concern now he supposed. Right now he should work his brain to figure out why Varuni and Devsena had run away. That too with the.... Treasure...
Must they run away so early in the morning though? Bhalla preferred his sleep a lot, and being woken up with water to know your wife has ran away with her sister in law with your kingdom's gold. Isn't exactly the ideal situation now is it?
“Rajmata, there's not even a footprint they both have left behind.”
In came running Kattappa. His bald head and white beard shinning. Bhalla wondered how that old man's beard had such a growth even when his head was devoid of even a single strand.
“Maa, are you sure they left and aren't just hiding somewhere?”
“OFCOURSE I KNOW THEY LEFT. THEY LEFT WITH ALL THE GOLD! THE TREASURY IS EMPTY EXCEPT FOR ONE SINGLE COIN AND A LETTER”
“What does it says?”
“THAT THEY LEFT!”
Ofcourse the one time he opened his mouth, had to be to ask something so dumb. The letter would obviously say that the ladies left. What was Bhalla even thinking? It has to be because of some idiot's company. Otherwise he was sure he wasn't so dumb.
“Maa do you not think we should search for them?”
Wait now he was confused. Why was Bahu being the smart one and he the dumb? Wasn't he supposed to get the plot facilities in this story? The writer clearly preferred him over Bahu. Then why this discrimination?
“WELL DONE BAHU, FINALLY YOU SPOKE SOMETHING OF USE”
And again, Bhalla saw his father sneering at Bahu. That man really does needs a new hobby other than beefing with kids.
But Bhalla was sure what Bahu said was very definitely going to turn against him. He had experience from years of knowing his mother's tactics. He would credit himself as really observant if he wasn't so humble.
“You are right, someone should find them. And it's going to be you and Bhalla.”
“But maa-”
“NOW GO AND DO NOT COME BACK UNTIL YOU HAVE RECOVERED THE ENTIRE GOLD AND FOUND YOUR WIVES. BRING THEM BACK TO MAHISHMATI TO ME. GET OUT AT ONCE!”
No. Bhalla just wanted some sleep. He wasn't going to go on any search mission with just Bahu out of all people!?! Whatever happened to sending actual real search party in situations like this?
He looked at Bahu, only to find him scratching his head. Probably wondering what else to say next that wouldn't get him screamed at. Or worse, forcefully thrown out of the palace to go on the search.
Even so Bahu was hopeless, and his words will have affect on his mother as much as the hair oil's affect on Kattappa. Which is none. So he'll have to take matters into his own hands.
“But maa why us? You can send a proper team for this”
“AS THEY ARE YOUR WIVES IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BEING THEM BACK. AND YOU WON'T GET ANY HELP FROM ANYONE ELSE.”
Ok shit. That didn't worked as well.
Bahu now looked genuinely distressed. And he supposed it was rightfully so. Because how can just two of them find the ladies, when even in the palace they left no traces back? His mother really was stubborn and weird Bhalla thought.
“And definitely not Kattappa”
“No Kattappa?”
“No Kattappa.”
Bahu was ready to protest and he wondered why that dumbass was so attached to that old man. For fucks sake he was old. Should Bahu just use his brain a little he'd know that old people will be of zero help in a search mission.
But that won't make Bahu, Bahu. Then he would have been smarter Bahu. And Bahu isn't supposed to be the one with common senses. It's him that has that quality. Which was very much overlooked in his opinion.
“NOW GET OUT. AND BRING BACK THE WEALTH AND BRING BACK THE WIVES”
He looked at his father. Who looked like he wanted to protest, but then even surprising Bhalla, his father nodded along to his mother's words.
Excuse him? Wasn't his father supposed to be on his side? Why was his father letting his mother disturb his peaceful sleep and sending him to a search mission. With Bahu.
He tried to tell his father through the same eye language as before. To which all his father did was glare at him and wiggle his brows back.
But he understood not a word- wiggle his father meant to say except something about having no money to pay salary...
Well, then Bhalla supposed there truly was no other choice. Except to roam around everywhere with the most annoying person with him. He was sure by the time they even found Varuni and Devsena, he would have lost half his brain power from just being in close proximity of Bahu.
“KATTAPPA!”
“Yes Rajmata?”
“Lead them out. And make sure you AREN'T at all helping Bahu.”
“Errr... Yes. As you say.”
Kattappa looked at Bahu with apologetic eyes. And now Bhalla was even more confused. Why does not even the old man have any common sense? Why does no one in this whole damn kingdom have common sense?
But just then both him and Bahu were ushered out of the court hall by Kattappa. Who by the way also looked like he could do with some sleep. Bhalla supposed only his mother was the one who woke up so early in the morning.
Bahu whined about work and having no back-up from Kattappa, so Bhalla threw him a diagusted glance. To which Bahu just whined more. Making his want to bang his head in the nearest pillar with frustration.
And just like that, Bhalla started to mentally prepare himself to find the ladies and the treasure. While trying to stay sane travelling with the dumbest person in existence.
Their faith was seal. And it didn't included a proper sleep on supreme white beds.

An Alphabet of Legendary Ladies - व for वरुनी/Varuni, for @medhasree!
Devi of the ocean depths, mistress of the makara, Varuni holds wine in her cupped hands: a blessing to mortals, to forget their woes; a love-charm unlike any other; oblivion greater than any found in her husband’s realm. Joy she brings, and sometimes grief too, but sweetness above all.
