Carmen Santiago - Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

Based purely on what has been revealed about Lee Cronin’s remake of “The Mummy”, this is my guess on what the plot will be:

It’s a genderbent version of the original Boris Karloff movie. An Irish explorer (Jack Reynor) and his Spanish archaeologist wife (Laia Costa) are part of an expedition to Egypt, which is being led by the wife’s mother (Verónica Falcón). They uncover the long-lost tomb of our titular mummy (May Calamawy). Of course, this leads to someone foolishly reading a spell that resurrects the mummy. The group manages to flee as the mummy disappears.

Several years later, the explorer and the archaeologist moved back to either Spain or Ireland (or some location that resembles either of those countries since those are where the movie was filmed). Much to the archaeologist’s horror, the mummy has somehow integrated herself into society. She’s been stalking the archaeologist and her family this whole time.

Why? Because the Irish explorer has a striking resemblance to the mummy’s lover, to the point that the mummy believes he is her lover’s reincarnation. Thus, the mummy plans to “mummify” the explorer so they can be together forever. (historical note: to justify the casting of an Egyptian actress and a white Irish actor, maybe the mummy and her lover were Cleopatra and Marc Antony).

So going by the characters from the original 1932 movie -

1) Jack Reynor = Helen Grosvenor / Anck-es-en-Amon

2) Laia Costa = Frank Whemple

3) Verónica Falcón = Sir Joseph Whemple

4) May Calamawy = Imhotep aka The Mummy

given that lee cronin's the mummy (2026) is the first version of the classic universal monster movie to feature actual egyptian actors, it may technically be the most authentic. but when you consider how much of it takes place in albuquerque while centering on an american family and taking inspiration from bog mummies in the uk, it's kind of a different story. on our latest episode of spooky tuesday, we're unwrapping all of the evil dead-esque dressings to get to the bottom of what makes this mummy movie different as we debate what works, what doesn't, and what's only there to gross you out.

Imaginary will be released on Digital on May 7 and on Blu-ray and DVD on May 14. Produced by Blumhouse, the 2024 horror film is currently available on PVOD.
