KODA KUMI LIVE TOUR 2017 ~W FACE~
Me as I make my ass cheeks clap to "Cupcake."
I've had an tumultuous journey through Kumi Koda's career, if old embarrassing blog entries are any indication, not including the past year that I spent going over her entire discography in chronological order. And up until now, no single album has impressed me as much as W FACE ~outside~. Some quick thoughts on why this album is so great:
Except for one piano ballad ("Heartless") all of the slow tracks have been shipped off to W FACE ~inside~, Koda's twin album release. Even as I've grown to appreciate a greater number of sentimental K-pop ballads, I'm still not sure what to do with Koda's. I don't think there has been a single one that I've really liked -- despite the fact that she admitted that she initially wanted to sing ballads exclusively, her slower songs are the weakest spots in her catalog, weaker than her two cover albums that at least yielded two great songs apiece. Because this album is meant to be only faster, harder, better pop tracks, we get what Koda does best: slay.
Koda out-CL’s CL, -- she does a better CL than the ex-2NE1 vocalist has done since, like, "Menbung" on "insane," one of my favorite tracks.
The grimy saxophones, from "Bassline" to "Bangerang."
The understated cover art giving me total FEEL vibes, because black & white bare-eleganza is the new go-to for our queens Grande, Hamasaki, Amuro, et al.
It makes me wonder what Namie Amuro has been up to.
These songs are quick, most hovering around the 3-minute mark: they bang the door in, set off the fireworks, and leave before the smoke starts to clear. I'm really into this right now; pop albums shouldn't be longer than 45 minutes and I don't care how many great songs are on it, Ellie Goulding really shouldn't have an album with SIXTEEN songs on it. Cut that shit mercilessly, Bruno Mars-style, please.
What's not to love about this? Maybe the PVs, which are kind of boring ("Bassline" deserves better/"Ultraviolet" is questionable). In terms of Koda's other albums, I'm not sure where this album falls. For older fans, any number of albums from JAPONESQUE to Black Cherry (I personally still really like Deja vu) will surely top W FACE ~inside OR outside~. I'm just happy to hear a single Koda album in the seventeen years of her reign, that dazzles from start to finish in my lifetime.
OH MY GOD. I JUST HAD AN EARGASM. KODA KUMI. THANK YOU FOR W FACE!
