Ware-wolves. They were once pretty close to normal wolves, but they subsisted from consuming precious metals from the earth and stone. Over time they saw humans trading in such delicacies as copper, silver and gold, far purer than the slag to which they’d become accustomed. And so, they learned.
They found that making the same noises as the merchants they observed, and laying out whatever knickknacks they could find before them would sometimes convince passersby to give them their metals.
Have they become merchants themselves? No - this is merely an act of mimicry, similar to many species of birds and large cats.
