The Cladocera are an order of small crustaceans commonly called water fleas. Over 650 species have been recognised so far, with many more undescribed. They first appeared before the Permian period, and have since invaded most freshwater habitats. Wikipedia

This is a sample of the mini- crustacean culture we have been growing. It includes two species of water flea and a freshwater copepod. We first had to culture unicellular algae and yeast upon which the tiny crustaceans feed. These little creatures will feed the larval axolotl we recently bred.
