Chapter 1

What am I doing? Norah asks herself as she stares out at the deceptively calm, inky range of open water. Why am I going through with this? The wind, thick and heavy with salt, swishes soothingly against her but gives her no reply. The tang of the sea sits heavy upon her tongue, the scent of its fish - thanks to the two deckhands who’ve been casting their hooks into the water for the better part of the day - cloying. The horizon is heavy with clouds, thick, dense, scary-looking blobs that rumble threateningly. Storm's coming, she’d heard some of the crew mutter balefully as they secured barrels and crates with thick ropes. Behind her, there’s the sound of feet shifting, followed by a cough. She rolls her eyes. “You don’t have to stand there and keep watch, Luther,” she says, “I have no intention of throwing myself into the ocean.” “I’m just following my orders, miss,” he clears his throat. It’s hard to relax when she knows he’s lurking, harder to take in the way the moonlight outlines every gentle crest and swell silver. The gentle sounds of the water lapping against the edge of their carrack isn’t enough to soothe the tension roiling in her chest. [Read more on AO3]

I wanted to join in on Mermay this year but the post-semester burnout won.....again. I want to get back to writing Waves of Change, but only time will tell if I can get another update out before the fall semester starts. I have a lot that I need and want to do and I have to pace myself 😵‍💫
